South Carolina Upstate at Texas
AUSTIN, Texas (Interstat) — The undefeated and No. 1-ranked Texas Longhorns put their perfect record on the line Friday night when they host the South Carolina Upstate Spartans in nonconference baseball action at UFCU Disch–Falk Field.
First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CDT on March 6.
Texas (12-0) has been dominant early, outscoring opponents 104-22 this season. The Longhorns are coming off a 16-3 rout of Houston Christian on Tuesday. A player to watch for Texas is right-hander Samuel Cozart, who earned the win in that game with five strong innings, allowing one run on one hit and striking out six. In his last two starts, Cozart has combined for nine innings, two hits, one earned run and 14 strikeouts.
The Spartans (7-7) arrive in Austin looking to rebound from a 12-3 loss at South Carolina on Tuesday. South Carolina Upstate has shown volatility, with lopsided wins over Western Carolina and NJIT but also several narrow defeats.
South Carolina Upstate will likely look to right-hander Max Kaplan to set the tone. Kaplan is coming off a tough outing against the Gamecocks, allowing five earned runs over 5 2/3 innings, but he was brilliant in his start prior, throwing six scoreless innings with six strikeouts in a win over North Florida on Feb. 24.
The Longhorns’ offense has been relentless, featuring multiple contributors. In Tuesday’s win, designated hitter Carson Tinney homered and drove in three runs, while center fielder Aiden Robbins added two RBIs.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, Texas is projected to win a 7-5 decision.
This game is the first of a three-game weekend series between the teams. They will meet again Saturday afternoon and Sunday.
