Rice at Abilene Christian

ABILENE, Texas (Interstat) — Anthony Diaz delivered a dominant relief performance, and the Rice Owls survived a chaotic ninth-inning rally by Abilene Christian to edge the Wildcats 5-4 on Friday night at Kimbrell Arena.

The most important part of the game was the immediate and game-altering impact of Diaz. Entering with no outs and two runners on in the bottom of the third inning with Rice clinging to a 5-0 lead, Diaz inherited a precarious situation. He allowed both inherited runners to score on a double by Diego Cardenas and an RBI single, which cut the lead to 5-3, but then slammed the door shut. From that point, the right-hander was untouchable, retiring 15 of the final 16 batters he faced. Over six innings of work, Diaz allowed no hits and just one earned run while striking out nine, single-handedly stabilizing the game for Rice.

The Owls (8-6) had staked their pitching staff to an early cushion with a first-inning outburst against Wildcats starter Brett Lanman. After leadoff hitter Robson was hit by a pitch, Paul Smith launched a two-run homer to deep left field, providing all the offense Rice would ultimately need. Lanman settled in after the rocky first, allowing just three hits over six innings while striking out six.

Rice added a critical insurance run in the seventh against reliever Evan Whiteaker. Pinch-runner Daigre stole second and scored on a two-out RBI single by Jacob Devenny, making it 6-3. An unearned run in the eighth, driven in by Boehm after a two-base error by left fielder Ladusau, extended the lead to 7-3.

Abilene Christian (6-6) mounted a dramatic and messy comeback attempt in the bottom of the ninth against Rice reliever Marco Fuentes. Fuentes loaded the bases by hitting Payne and walking Arias around a strikeout. After a fielder’s choice left the bases loaded with two outs, Fuentes then hit both Gray and Jones with pitches, forcing in a run to make it 7-4.

Rice closer Tanner Wiggins was summoned with the bases still loaded and induced a game-ending groundout to shortstop from Ladusau, stranding three runners to secure his first save of the season.

The game was a contrast in offensive approaches. Rice managed six hits but capitalized on two Wildcats errors and executed two sacrifice hits. Abilene Christian was held to five hits but drew nine walks and were hit by three pitches, repeatedly threatening but stranding 12 runners on base. The Wildcats’ bullpen, after Lanman’s solid start, saw Whiteaker allow three hits and an earned run over two innings, while Caden Greanead pitched a scoreless ninth.

The victory improved Rice to 8-6 on the season, while Abilene Christian fell to .500 at 6-6. The result defied the pregame projections from Interstat, whose game simulator had predicted a 5-4 Wildcats victory and gave Abilene Christian a 62.7% probability to win.

The two teams continue their three-game series on Saturday and Sunday at Kimbrell Arena.
