Longwood at Alabama State
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Interstat) — Jaxon Lloyd dominated over six no-hit innings and Jae’dan Carter launched two home runs as Longwood routed Alabama State 16-1 in a nonconference baseball game Friday at Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
The game’s most decisive sequence came before many fans had settled into their seats. Carter, the Lancers’ left fielder, set an immediate tone by crushing the first pitch of the game from Alabama State starter Jorhan LaBoy over the fence in left-center field for a solo home run. Longwood (12-2) was just getting started, adding another run in the first on a Jayson Nash groundout to take a 2-0 lead.
That was more than enough support for Lloyd. The Longwood right-hander was overpowering, striking out 11 Hornets batters while walking none. The only blemish on his line was a solo home run surrendered to Devin Chandler in the sixth inning, which accounted for Alabama State’s lone run. Lloyd retired the first 10 batters he faced and allowed only three baserunners, all of whom reached on errors. He was relieved by Jackson Garland to start the seventh inning.
Carter provided further cushion with his second solo homer, again to left-center, in the second inning. He finished 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Longwood added an unearned run in the fourth when Carter scored on a throwing error by Alabama State shortstop Alex Espaillat.
The game remained a 4-1 contest until the ninth inning, when the Lancers erupted for 12 runs on seven hits, five walks, two hit batters, three wild pitches and two Alabama State errors. The Hornets (6-7) used three pitchers in the frame, which saw 18 Lancers come to the plate. Jack McMullan ignited the outburst with a leadoff homer. He later added a two-run double, finishing with three RBIs. Jon Howard, Lucas Johnson and Ben Pulliam also drove in runs during the inning, which featured only five earned runs.
Garland and Landen Moore finished the combined three-hitter for Longwood, with Garland throwing 2 1/3 scoreless innings and Moore a perfect ninth. The Lancers’ pitching staff combined for 13 strikeouts and did not issue a walk.
LaBoy took the loss for Alabama State, allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits over five innings. Chandler’s sixth-inning homer was the highlight for the Hornets, who managed nine hits but stranded seven runners.
The victory improved Longwood to 12-2, while Alabama State fell to 6-7. The teams are scheduled to continue their series with a doubleheader on Saturday.
The lopsided result defied pregame projections. Interstat’s game simulator had projected an 8-5 Longwood win, while its ELO system gave Alabama State a 63.1 percent probability of victory.
