Notre Dame at Duke
DURHAM, N.C. (Interstat) — Jack Radel delivered a masterful performance on the mound, and the Notre Dame offense erupted for a five-run fifth inning to power the Fighting Irish to a 10-4 victory over the Duke Blue Devils in Atlantic Coast Conference baseball action Friday at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
The game, which opened a three-game series, was dominated early by Radel. The Notre Dame right-hander was nearly untouchable, carrying a no-hit bid into the seventh inning. He finished with seven strong innings, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out nine. The lone blemish was a solo home run by Duke’s Michael DiMartini leading off the seventh.
Radel’s outing set the tone, overshadowing a pregame projection from Interstat that favored Duke with a 58.8% win probability and a predicted final score of 7-6.
Notre Dame’s offense, which produced 14 hits, broke through in the third inning when TJ Coy’s RBI single scored Drew Berkland. The Fighting Irish then seized control with a decisive rally in the fifth against Duke starter Aidan Weaver.
Berkland ignited the outburst with a solo home run to left field. After a walk to Coy, catcher Mark Quatrani launched a two-run homer to right. Following a mound visit, Bino Watters greeted reliever Nick Mastroianni with a solo shot to left-center, extending the lead to 5-0. The Irish added two more runs in the inning on an RBI single from Brady Barth, capitalizing on a hit batter and a single to chase Weaver and build a 7-0 advantage.
Weaver took the loss, surrendering five earned runs on six hits over 4 2/3 innings.
Notre Dame padded its lead with two runs in the eighth on an RBI single from Quatrani and a run-scoring double from Watters, who finished a triple shy of the cycle with three hits, a homer and two RBIs. Jamie Zee added a solo homer in the ninth.
Duke, held to just two hits through eight innings, staged a late rally against the Notre Dame bullpen in the ninth. After a leadoff single, Matthew Strand hit a two-run homer. Following another single, Bobby Marsh hit a pinch-hit solo home run. The comeback attempt ended there, as reliever Jackson Snyder induced a game-ending groundout.
Quatrani and Berkland each had three hits for Notre Dame, with Berkland scoring three runs. Duke’s Wallace Albright had three of his team’s nine hits.
With the win, Notre Dame improved to 8-3 overall and 1-0 in the ACC. Duke fell to 12-4 and 0-1 in conference play. The series continues Saturday.
