Austin Peay at Utah Tech
ST. GEORGE, Utah (Interstat) — A surging Utah Tech squad looks to continue its dominant start when it hosts Austin Peay in the opener of a doubleheader Friday at Burns Arena.
The Trailblazers (11-1) have won 10 straight games, including a four-game sweep of Northern Colorado last weekend. Their potent offense is led by Gavin Glasgow, who drove in five runs with a home run in Sunday’s 6-4 win. Utah Tech’s only loss came Feb. 19 at Pacific.
Austin Peay (5-6) arrives seeking consistency after dropping three of its last four. The Governors were shut out 3-0 at Cincinnati on Feb. 28 and fell 16-3 at Mississippi State on Feb. 24. They also lost to Utah Tech 8-0 on Thursday.
The focus for the Governors will be on starter Kade Shatwell. The right-hander has been brilliant in his last two outings, pitching 13 2/3 consecutive hitless innings. He took a hard-luck loss against Cincinnati, allowing three earned runs over eight innings with seven strikeouts despite not surrendering a hit, following 5 2/3 no-hit innings in a win over Eastern Michigan on Feb. 22.
Utah Tech will counter with a lineup that has averaged 8.2 runs per game during its winning streak. Glasgow’s power provides a key threat in the middle of the order.
The teams conclude the two-game set Saturday. Austin Peay returns home next week to face Ohio, while Utah Tech travels to face BYU on Tuesday before a weekend series at Santa Clara.
First pitch for Game 1 is scheduled for Friday afternoon under cloudy skies with temperatures near 57 degrees. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-4 Utah Tech victory.
