WICHITA, Kan. (Interstat) — The Wichita State Shockers unleashed a historic offensive barrage Friday evening, erasing an early four-run deficit to demolish the West Georgia Wolves 22-4 in a non-conference baseball game at Eck Stadium.

The game’s pivotal, game-breaking sequence occurred in a marathon bottom of the sixth inning, where the Shockers sent 18 batters to the plate and scored 11 runs on seven hits, three walks, two hit batters, and three West Georgia errors. The inning turned a commanding 11-4 lead into a laugher and showcased the relentless depth of the Wichita State lineup.

The afternoon began inauspiciously for the Shockers. West Georgia capitalized on a hit batter, a walk, and a critical fielding error by Wichita State third baseman Kaufer to push across four unearned runs in the top of the first inning against starter Matthew Cuccias.

Wichita State began chipping away immediately, with Owen Washburn driving in a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom half. The Shockers then seized control with a seven-run explosion in the second. Jaden Gustafson tied the game with a two-run double before Washburn delivered the decisive blow, a towering three-run home run that gave Wichita State a 7-4 lead it would not relinquish. Mauricio Kaufer followed with a solo shot to cap the inning.

West Georgia’s Patrick McCullough hit a solo homer in the third, but the Shockers answered with a two-run blast from shortstop Alex Ulloa in their half of the inning. The Wolves scratched across two more runs in the fourth on a groundout and a sacrifice fly to make it 10-4, but would muster only one more hit the rest of the way.

Cuccias settled in after the rocky first to earn the win, pitching five innings, allowing three earned runs on three hits while striking out five. The Shockers’ bullpen was dominant, with Caleb Reed and Heitaro Hayashi combining for two perfect innings and three strikeouts.

Washburn, the designated hitter, was the top star for Wichita State, going 2 for 3 with a home run, a sacrifice fly, and five RBIs. His recent surge continued, adding to a multi-hit game in Thursday’s win over the same Wolves team. Ulloa finished 3 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs, while Kaleb Duncan’s three-run homer in the sixth inning punctuated the onslaught. Gustafson added three hits and three RBIs, and Joshua Wulfert went 3 for 4 with an RBI.

West Georgia, which managed only four hits total, used five pitchers who combined to issue 10 walks and hit three batters. The Wolves’ defense committed four errors, leading to six unearned runs.

The victory improved Wichita State’s record to 8-3, while West Georgia fell to 1-12, extending its losing streak. The teams are scheduled for a doubleheader on Saturday to continue the series.

The Shockers’ 22-run output defied the pregame projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 7-0 Wichita State victory. The simulator’s ELO system gave the Shockers a 66.1% probability to win.
