Virginia Tech at Georgia Tech
ATLANTA (Interstat) — The surging Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, owners of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s best record, host the Virginia Tech Hokies to open a three-game series Friday evening at Russ Chandler Stadium.
First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. under cloudy skies with a game-time temperature near 77 degrees.
Georgia Tech (10-1) has been dominant, averaging over 11 runs per game during a seven-game winning streak. Their most recent victory was a 4-1 road win at Georgia State on Tuesday, keyed by a stellar combined pitching effort.
Virginia Tech (7-5) looks to rebound from a 13-4 home loss to Marshall on Tuesday that snapped a two-game win streak. The Hokies have faced a tough early schedule, including losses to then-Tennessee and Texas A&M.
A key matchup will feature Virginia Tech shortstop Pete Daniel against a deep Georgia Tech pitching staff. Daniel is batting .300 over his last five games and had two hits with an RBI in the loss to Marshall. For the Yellow Jackets, right-hander Dimitri Angelakos is a versatile arm to watch. He threw five perfect innings of relief with five strikeouts in Tuesday’s win and has not allowed an earned run in 7 2/3 innings this season.
The series is a critical early ACC test for both teams. According to Interstat’s game simulator, Georgia Tech is projected to win the opener 7-5.
The series continues Saturday at 4 p.m. and concludes Sunday at 1 p.m.
