UCLA at Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Interstat) — Logan Reddemann delivered a dominant performance on the mound, and Mulivai Levu powered the offense with four hits as UCLA routed Ohio State 11-1 in a nonconference baseball game Friday evening at Bill Davis Stadium.

The Bruins, improving to 11-2, seized control with a six-run outburst in the first two innings and never looked back against the Buckeyes, who fell to 5-7.

The most important part of the game was the sheer dominance of UCLA starter Logan Reddemann. The right-hander was untouchable over six innings, allowing no hits and striking out 10 while walking one and hitting a batter. He faced just one batter over the minimum, with a second-inning double play erasing a hit batsman. Ohio State’s only baserunner against him, Mason Eckelman, reached on a two-out double in the first inning before being stranded. Reddemann retired the final 13 batters he faced, setting the tone for a lopsided victory.

UCLA’s offense provided more than enough support early, capitalizing on Ohio State mistakes. The Bruins scored two unearned runs in a messy first inning. Roch Cholowsky walked, advanced to third on a single by Levu and scored on Roman Martin’s RBI single. Levu later scored on a throwing error by shortstop CJ Reid.

The Bruins broke it open in the second against Buckeyes starter Gavin Kuzniewski. After Dean West was hit by a pitch, Cholowsky launched a two-run homer to left field. Later in the inning, with two outs and a runner on second, Will Gasparino connected for another two-run shot to left-center, pushing the lead to 6-0.

Levu, the Bruins’ first baseman, was a constant threat, finishing 4 for 6. He capped his afternoon with a two-run homer down the left-field line in the eighth inning, scoring Cholowsky, who had walked.

Ohio State avoided the shutout in the seventh inning when Dane Harvey led off with a solo home run to right-center against UCLA reliever Ian May. It was one of only five hits for the Buckeyes on the night. Alex Bemis and CJ Reid had back-to-back singles in the fifth for Ohio State’s first hits, but they were stranded.

UCLA relievers Ian May, Jake Swenson and Zach Strickland combined for three innings of one-run ball, allowing just two hits while striking out four to close out the game.

Sahil Patel took the loss for Ohio State after relieving Kuzniewski to start the fifth inning. Patel allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits over four innings of work.

The victory extended UCLA’s winning streak to four games. The Bruins’ offense, which produced nine hits, has now scored 10 or more runs in six of their 11 wins this season. Ohio State has lost four of its last five.

The teams are scheduled to continue their three-game series Saturday afternoon at Bill Davis Stadium.
