Omaha vs. Southern Illinois
OMAHA, Neb. (Interstat) — Two teams looking to build momentum will meet Friday evening when the Omaha Mavericks face the Southern Illinois Salukis in a neutral-site nonconference baseball game at Siebert Field in Minneapolis.
Both clubs enter the 6 p.m. contest with identical 4-7 overall records. The game is part of a multi-team event in Minneapolis.
Omaha arrives after a 5-8 loss at Nebraska on Tuesday. The Mavericks have shown offensive flashes, including a 15-run outburst in a win at Wichita State on Feb. 28, but have lost seven of their last nine.
A key bat for Omaha is left fielder Tyler Bishop. He homered and drove in two runs against Nebraska and is coming off a 4-for-5, two-RBI performance in a win over Western Michigan on Feb. 21. Over his last seven games, Bishop has 10 RBIs.
Southern Illinois snapped a four-game skid with a 9-4 home win over North Dakota State on Tuesday. First baseman Cecil Lofton powered that victory, hitting a grand slam and driving in four runs. It was his second four-RBI game this season, having also done so in a loss at Appalachian State on Feb. 22.
Pitching details for Friday’s matchup were not announced. In Tuesday’s win, Salukis reliever Alec Ammerman provided 3 2/3 innings of solid work, striking out five.
The game will be played under cloudy skies with a temperature near 51 degrees at first pitch.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, the projected final score is Omaha 4, Southern Illinois 3.
Following this game, Omaha will stay in Minneapolis to face Northwestern on Saturday, while Southern Illinois will play UNLV at the same site.
