Saint Thomas (Minn.) at Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. (Interstat) — The Kansas Jayhawks look to continue their strong start and secure a series win when they host the struggling Saint Thomas (Minn.) Tommies in the second game of a three-game set Friday evening at Hoglund Ballpark.

First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. under cloudy skies with temperatures around 55 degrees.

Kansas (8-4) opened the series with a 4-2 victory Thursday night. The Jayhawks’ pitching staff, led by starter Mason Cook and relievers Riane Ritter and Boede Rahe, held the Tommies to three hits. Cook (1-1, 3.86 ERA) is slated to start again Friday. In Thursday’s win, he went 4 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.

Saint Thomas (1-9) has lost nine straight since a season-opening win. The Tommies will turn to right-hander Brayden Olson (0-2, 3.18 ERA) in search of their first victory since Feb. 20. Olson was effective in a hard-luck loss Thursday, tossing 5 1/3 innings of shutout relief with three strikeouts against these same Jayhawks. In his last three appearances, all in relief, he has not allowed a hit over 15 2/3 innings, though he has been charged with six earned runs.

The teams will meet again Saturday at a neutral site in Kansas City, Missouri, before concluding the series back in Lawrence on Sunday.

According to Interstat, Kansas holds an 80.1% probability to win Friday, with a projected final score of 7-1.
