Jake Cumming’s Strong Start Leads Coppin State to First Win, Edging Mercyhurst 2‑1

ELKRIDGE, Md. (Interstat) — Jake Cumming pitched 7 2/3 strong innings to guide the Coppin State Eagles to their first victory of the season, a 2-1 win over the Mercyhurst Lakers in a Northeast Conference game Friday evening at Joe Cannon Stadium.

Cumming allowed one run on five hits while striking out seven. His effort outdueled Mercyhurst starter Matthew Delvaux, who took a no-hitter into the sixth inning but surrendered a two-run homer to Armando Hurtado in the second. Hurtado’s shot scored Angel Garcia, who reached on an error.

Mercyhurst scored its lone run in the sixth when Jayden Walker singled and later came home on a single by Michael Samarin. Justin Ritz earned the save for Coppin State with four strikeouts over 1 1/3 hitless innings. Coppin State improved to 1-8, while Mercyhurst fell to 0-8.
