Army Looks to Continue Momentum Against VCU in Weekend Opener

RICHMOND, Va. (Interstat) — The Army Black Knights visit the VCU Rams on Friday to open a three-game weekend series, bringing a winning record against a Rams squad seeking consistency.

First pitch is scheduled for Friday evening at The Diamond.

Army (5-4) enters having won four of its last five, including a three-game sweep at Queens (N.C.) last weekend. The Black Knights’ strength has been pitching, particularly from starter Trey Ates. In his last two outings, a win at South Carolina on Feb. 20 and last Sunday’s 5-2 victory at Queens, Ates has combined for 10 innings pitched without allowing a hit, giving up one earned run while striking out five. He is a key reason Army’s staff has been formidable.

VCU (5-8) looks to rebound from a 12-10 midweek loss to Old Dominion on Wednesday. The Rams’ offense has shown flashes, led by second baseman Alec Warden. He homered in that loss to ODU, providing a bright spot in a game where the Rams’ bullpen struggled to hold a lead. VCU had won two of three prior, including a 9-2 win over William & Mary.

For Army, Chris Barr, who drove in two runs in Sunday’s win, will be counted on to provide offensive support. VCU will need production beyond Warden; designated hitter Jacob Lee also homered in the midweek contest.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, Army is projected to win Friday’s contest by a score of 5-2.

The series continues with afternoon games on Saturday and Sunday. Army returns north next week to host Merrimack, while VCU remains home to begin Atlantic 10 conference play against La Salle next Friday.
