California Baptist at BYU

PROVO, Utah (Interstat) — A hot California Baptist team looks to extend its winning streak against a BYU squad seeking consistency when the teams meet Friday at Larry H. Miller Field.

First pitch is scheduled for the evening, with a forecast of 39 degrees and rain. The Lancers (11-3) enter having won eight of their last nine, including a 5-3 victory over UC Riverside on Tuesday. The Cougars (6-5) are coming off a week-long break following a 7-6 loss at Long Beach State on Feb. 28.

California Baptist’s offense is powered by Bryce McFeely, who is batting .405 (15-for-37) with three home runs and 13 RBIs over his last 10 games. He went 2 for 4 with two homers and four RBIs in the win over UC Riverside.

BYU will counter with right-hander Nate Gray (0-0, 3.86 ERA), who has not allowed a hit over 8 2/3 innings in his two appearances this season, though he walked seven against Long Beach State. The Cougars’ bullpen faltered late in that loss, squandering a 6-3 lead.

The Lancers took the first game of this series Thursday, defeating BYU 8-0. California Baptist’s pitching staff has been strong, holding opponents to three runs or fewer in seven of its 11 wins.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a California Baptist victory, 8-5.

The teams conclude the series Saturday afternoon before BYU hosts Utah Tech on Tuesday. California Baptist travels to face Loyola Marymount next Tuesday.
