Mississippi Valley State at Tennessee-Martin
Rain Threatens Opener of Doubleheader Between Delta Devils, Skyhawks
MARTIN, Tenn. (Interstat) — The Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils and Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks are set to open a three-game series with a Friday afternoon doubleheader at Skyhawk Park, though forecasts for rain and 73-degree temperatures could complicate the schedule.
The first game of the twin bill pits two teams seeking momentum in the early season. The visiting Delta Devils (2-7) are coming off their best offensive performance, a 15-7 road win at Alcorn State on Sunday. Tennessee-Martin (3-6) looks to rebound after dropping two of three at home to Bradley last weekend, including an 11-8 loss on Sunday.
A player to watch for Mississippi Valley State is left fielder Aiden Meyer, who powered Sunday’s victory by going 2 for 5 with a home run and five RBIs. For the Skyhawks, third baseman Cameron Greene is riding a hot streak, collecting three hits and two RBIs in his last outing.
The Delta Devils’ recent surge followed a seven-game skid. After being swept in a four-game set at Stephen F. Austin in mid-February, they split two games at Jacksonville State before the offensive breakout against Alcorn State.
Tennessee-Martin’s season has been inconsistent, mixing high-scoring wins like a 17-2 rout of Bradley with defensive struggles, including allowing 15 runs in a loss at Nicholls State on Feb. 22.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a tight, low-scoring affair for Game 1, favoring Tennessee-Martin by a 3-2 margin.
Following the doubleheader, the series concludes with a single game Saturday and another Sunday. Mississippi Valley State then travels to face New Orleans on Tuesday. Tennessee-Martin remains home next weekend to host The Citadel for a three-game set.
