Winthrop at Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. (Interstat) — Jake Marciano delivered a dominant six-inning start and the Auburn offense erupted early, powering the 11th-ranked Tigers to a 10-0 victory over Winthrop on Friday afternoon at Samford Stadium – Hitchcock Field at Plainsman Park.

The game, which began in the afternoon and concluded under evening lights, saw Auburn improve to 11-2 while handing the Eagles (10-3) a decisive defeat that defied a pregame projection from Interstat’s simulator, which had forecast a high-scoring 8-7 win for Winthrop. The Tigers’ performance aligned more closely with the system’s ELO metric, which gave Auburn an 81.9% probability to win.

The most important sequence of the game came immediately, as Auburn seized control in the bottom of the first inning against Winthrop starter Brayden GIlley. After a walk to Bristol Carter and a single by Cade Rembert, catcher Chase Fralick crushed a three-run homer to right field, staking the Tigers to a 3-0 lead before an out was recorded. That early outburst set the tone and provided more than enough support for Marciano.

The Auburn right-hander was brilliant, scattering three hits over six scoreless innings while striking out six and walking none. He efficiently worked around three hit batters and a double, never allowing a Winthrop runner to reach third base. The performance was a strong rebound for Marciano, who took the loss on Feb. 27 despite striking out nine over five innings in a 9-8 defeat to Nebraska.

Winthrop’s best chance came in the first inning, loading the bases with two hit batters and a walk, but Marciano induced an inning-ending strikeout to escape unscathed. The Eagles managed just three singles the rest of the way against him and the Auburn bullpen.

The Tigers broke the game open with a seven-run outburst across the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, Carter launched a two-run homer to left field, scoring Mike McCraine who had tripled, to extend the lead to 5-0. The fifth inning featured a costly Winthrop error that opened the door for five unearned runs. After a sacrifice fly made it 6-0, Fralick reached on a two-base error by the left fielder, allowing two runs to score. Third baseman Eric Guevara followed by hammering a two-run, opposite-field homer to left-center, capping the scoring at 10-0.

Auburn’s 11-hit attack was led by Fralick, who finished 2 for 4 with the three-run homer, a double and three RBIs. Carter went 2 for 3 with his two-run shot, two RBIs, two walks and three stolen bases. Bub Terrell was perfect at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a double and a hit-by-pitch.

For Winthrop, which entered on a four-game winning streak, the offense was stifled. Jonathan Wouters had a double, while Anthony Norton and Joey Skowronski added singles. The Eagles used five pitchers, with Casey Culbreth providing 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.

Ethan Harden closed the game for Auburn with a perfect seventh inning, including a strikeout.

The teams continue their three-game series on Saturday.
