Virginia at North Carolina

Preview: Virginia at North Carolina Set for ACC Showdown

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (Interstat) — Two of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s hottest teams will open a critical early-season series Friday evening when the seventh-ranked Virginia Cavaliers visit the third-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels at Boshamer Stadium.

First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. under cloudy skies with temperatures around 56 degrees.

The matchup features teams with a combined 23-3-1 record. Virginia (11-2) arrives having won eight of its last nine, including an 8-1 road win at Charlotte on Wednesday where its bullpen shined. North Carolina (12-1-1) has won five straight, most recently a 5-1 victory over Elon on Tuesday.

A key battle is expected in the late innings between two standout relievers. Virginia’s Lucas Hartman has been nearly untouchable, allowing no earned runs and just three hits over his last 8 1/3 innings across five appearances, striking out 11. For the Tar Heels, Walker McDuffie is coming off his best outing, tossing three scoreless innings with three strikeouts against Elon.

Both lineups have shown potent offense. Virginia has scored 10 or more runs in five games this season, including a 31-run outburst against Wagner. North Carolina has matched that firepower, plating 10 or more runs in six contests, highlighted by a 21-run performance against Le Moyne.

The series opener begins a three-game set that will likely impact the ACC Coastal Division race and national rankings. According to Interstat’s game simulator, Friday’s contest projects to be a high-scoring affair, favoring Virginia 8-7.

The teams will meet again Saturday and Sunday to conclude the series.
