Saint Thomas (Minn.) at Kansas
LAWRENCE, Kan. (Interstat) — A costly eighth-inning error by second baseman Tanner Recchio allowed two unearned runs to score, breaking a late tie and lifting Kansas to a 4-2 comeback victory over Saint Thomas on Thursday evening at Hoglund Ballpark.
The Tommies (1-9) took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning against Kansas starter Mason Cook and held it until the fourth. Tanner Recchio led off the game with a bunt single, stole second and scored when Max Bond’s single to right center was misplayed by Kansas right fielder Kareem Bach. Bond later scored on an RBI single by John Maulik in the fifth.
Kansas (8-4) chipped away. The Jayhawks got a run in the fourth without a hit when Augusto Mungarrieta scored from third on a balk by Saint Thomas starter Brayden Olson. They tied it in the fifth on an RBI single by Dariel Osoria that scored Collier Ballinger.
The game remained deadlocked at 2-2 into the bottom of the eighth, setting the stage for the decisive rally. With two outs and Zak Endres on in relief for Saint Thomas, the Jayhawks loaded the bases on a walk to Ballinger, a single by Janson LeBlanc and a walk to John Owen.
Dariel Osoria then hit a sharp grounder to Recchio at second. The sophomore, who had three of Saint Thomas’s nine hits, could not handle it cleanly, allowing Ballinger and LeBlanc to score on the throwing error.
The Jayhawks’ bullpen trio of Riane Ritter, Toby Scheidt and Boede Rahe combined for 4 1/3 scoreless innings of one-hit relief to secure the win. Ritter earned the victory with 2 1/3 perfect frames, and Rahe struck out four over the final 1 2/3 innings for the save.
Olson was the hard-luck loser for Saint Thomas despite a strong outing. He allowed just two earned runs on no hits over 5 1/3 innings, walking five and striking out three. Sam Stockman and Zak Endres provided 2 2/3 innings of hitless relief before the eighth-inning error.
The victory improved Kansas to 8-4, while Saint Thomas dropped its ninth game in its last ten outings. The teams continue their four-game series Friday at Hoglund Ballpark.
