Jacksonville at Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Interstat) — Eli Putnam lined a walk-off single into left-center field in the bottom of the ninth inning Tuesday night, capping a dramatic comeback for Florida State in a 7-6 victory over Jacksonville at Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium.

The Seminoles, who trailed 6-0 before recording their first out, completed a season sweep of the Dolphins after winning 13-3 in Jacksonville on Feb. 17.

The most important part of the game was Florida State’s immediate and sustained response to a disastrous top of the first inning. Jacksonville’s Cade Walter launched the game’s first pitch from Rhett Vaughn over the right-field wall, setting the tone for a six-run outburst. The Dolphins sent 10 men to the plate, collecting five hits including an RBI double from Abdriel Delgado and a two-run single from Nick DeLisi, chasing Vaughn after just two-thirds of an inning.

Facing the large early deficit, the Seminoles’ offense answered immediately in the bottom half against Jacksonville starter Gavin Dicks. Noah Sheffield doubled and scored on Myles Bailey’s single. Brody DeLamielleure then drove in Bailey with a double before John Stuetzer brought DeLamielleure home with another double, cutting the lead to 6-3.

The rally was sustained by a stellar performance from Florida State reliever Kevin Mebil, who entered in the first inning. Mebil threw 2 2/3 hitless innings, striking out two and stopping the Jacksonville offense cold, allowing his team to chip away.

Florida State added an unearned run in the second on a Sheffield sacrifice fly and DeLamielleure pulled them within one run with a solo home run to deep right field in the third, making it 6-5.

The Seminoles tied the game in the fifth. Hunter Carns doubled, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a perfectly executed bunt single by Stuetzer. Jacksonville reliever Dominic Pieto escaped further damage by striking out Chase Williams with the bases loaded.

Jacksonville reclaimed the lead in the seventh without a hit. Walter walked, stole second, took third on a single and scored on a wild pitch for a 6-6 tie. Florida State’s John Abraham then entered and dominated, striking out six over 2 2/3 hitless innings to keep the game deadlocked.

In the ninth, Carns led off with a double against Austin Williamson. After a walk and a balk moved both runners into scoring position, Jacksonville intentionally walked the hot-hitting Stuetzer to load the bases with no outs. Scout Updike was summoned from the bullpen, but Putnam greeted him by driving a 1-0 pitch into the gap to score Carns and trigger the celebration.

DeLamielleure led Florida State offensively, going 2 for 2 with a home run, a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Stuetzer was a perfect 3 for 3 with two RBIs. Abraham earned the win in relief.

For Jacksonville, Logan Baratta tripled as part of a 10-hit attack, but the Dolphins stranded eight runners and could not hold the early advantage.

With the win, Florida State improved to 9-2 overall. Jacksonville fell to 9-4.

The Seminoles host Mercer on Wednesday. Jacksonville begins a three-game home series against UNC Wilmington on Friday.
