Baylor vs Texas
HOUSTON (Interstat) — The Texas Longhorns capitalized on early Baylor miscues and rode a deep, dominant bullpen to a 5-2 victory Saturday at Daikin Park, extending their perfect start to the season.
The Longhorns (10-0) scored all five of their runs in the first three innings, with Anthony Pack Jr. delivering the key blows. Baylor (6-4) managed just four hits and struggled to solve a parade of Texas pitchers.
The decisive sequence came in the bottom of the first inning. After Baylor starter Mason Calder navigated early trouble, Texas broke through with two outs. Max Mendoza walked and Jared Rodriguez singled, with Rodriguez advancing to second and Mendoza to third on a throwing error by the pitcher. After a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, Pack Jr. laced a single through the right side. A subsequent error by the Baylor right fielder allowed two runs to score and Pack Jr. to race to third, giving Texas a 3-0 lead.
Pack Jr. struck again in the third. Following a Baylor error, he singled up the middle to drive in Rodriguez. He then took second on a sacrifice bunt by Dylan Borba that plated another run, pushing the Texas advantage to 5-0.
Baylor’s only response came in the fourth. A walk and a single set the table, and a wild pitch allowed one run to score. Treysen Snow later crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice by Wesley John, cutting the deficit to 5-2. The Bears threatened again in the seventh, putting two runners on with no outs, but Texas reliever Haiden Leffew entered and struck out the side to extinguish the rally.
The Longhorns’ bullpen was the story, combining for 7 1/3 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief after starter Luke Harrison allowed two runs over 3 1/3 innings. Max Grubbs, Michael Winter, Leffew, Ethan Walker and Thomas Burns followed in succession, striking out 11 Baylor batters. Leffew’s three strikeouts in the seventh were pivotal, and Burns earned the save with 1 2/3 perfect innings.
Baylor reliever Zack Wallace provided a bright spot, throwing three hitless innings with one strikeout to keep the Bears within reach.
Pack Jr. finished 2 for 4 with three RBIs to lead the Texas offense. Rodriguez scored twice. For Baylor, Tyriq Kemp Sanders had a hit and two walks.
Texas entered the game as a significant favorite, with Interstat’s ELO system giving the Longhorns a 73.90 percent probability to win. The result marked Baylor’s first loss in its last three games, following a 10-inning win at Mississippi on Friday.
Texas will conclude its weekend in Houston against Ohio State on Sunday. Baylor will face Texas-San Antonio at the same site.
