Incarnate Word at Houston Christian
HOUSTON (Interstat) -- In a wild Southland Conference offensive showcase that defied pregame projections, the Houston Christian Huskies erupted for a 17-8 victory over the Incarnate Word Cardinals on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at M.O. Campbell Center.
The game, which began in the afternoon and concluded under evening lights, saw the Huskies pound out 17 hits and overcome an early eight-run deficit to even their weekend series at one game apiece. The offensive explosion improved Houston Christian’s season record to 5-6, while Incarnate Word fell to 6-4.
The contest turned decisively in the middle innings, transforming from a pitchers’ duel into a slugfest. Incarnate Word starter Hayden Capers had held the Huskies hitless through four innings, though he allowed three earned runs. The Cardinals built their lead in the third inning when Cole Tabor launched a two-run homer, part of a three-run frame that made the score 8-1.
The most important part of the game arrived in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings, where Houston Christian’s lineup unleashed its fury. Trailing 8-3, the Huskies sent 11 batters to the plate in the fifth, scoring five runs to tie the game. The rally was highlighted by a two-run double from designated hitter Preston Curtis.
Houston Christian did not relent in the sixth, batting around again to plate five more runs and seize control for good. The crushing blow was a grand slam from Curtis, his second extra-base hit of the game, which broke an 8-8 tie and catapulted the Huskies to a 13-8 lead. Curtis finished 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and seven RBIs, a monumental performance that erased his quiet 1-for-4 showing in Friday’s loss to the same opponent.
The Huskies’ offense was a collective force. Rhett Hendricks went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs, while Katcher Halligan was 4-for-6 with a two-run homer in the seventh and three RBIs. Anthony Avalos added three hits, including an RBI triple in the eighth, and Jackson Walker contributed a solo home run.
Incarnate Word collected 12 hits, with Thomas Lyssy driving in three runs and Tabor adding two RBIs on his early homer. The Cardinals’ bullpen, however, could not contain the Huskies’ surge, allowing 14 runs over the final five innings after Capers’ departure.
Houston Christian starter David Lopez earned the win, working five innings and allowing three earned runs on five hits while striking out 10. The Huskies also executed two sacrifice flies in the victory.
The result starkly contrasted with the pregame simulation from Interstat, which had projected a low-scoring 6-4 win for Incarnate Word, though the Huskies entered with a slight 53.9% probability to win according to the system’s ELO rating.
The teams will conclude the three-game series on Sunday, March 1, in Houston.
