Winthrop Eagles Defeat Maine Black Bears in Afternoon-Night Doubleheader Opener

ROCK HILL, S.C. (Interstat) — Winthrop defeated Maine 7-2 on Saturday at Winthrop Ballpark in a game that spanned the afternoon and evening. The Eagles capitalized on Maine errors and a key home run to secure the win.

Winthrop starter Luke Earnhardt earned the win, allowing two runs on four hits over 4 1/3 innings. Maine’s Jason Krieger took the loss, surrendering five runs, though only one earned, over 5 1/3 innings.

The Black Bears took a brief 2-1 lead in the fourth on Troy Carpenter’s two-run double. Winthrop responded in the sixth when Jaylen Hernandez hit a two-run homer to deep right, putting the Eagles ahead for good. Winthrop added two more in the sixth and two in the seventh, aided by a hit-by-pitch and a Maine fielding error.

Winthrop improved to 8-2. Maine fell to 2-9. The teams conclude their series Sunday.
