Miami (FL) at Florida Atlantic
BOCA RATON, Fla. (Interstat) — Daniel Cuvet’s two-run homer ignited a six-run ninth inning as the unbeaten Miami Hurricanes pulled away late to defeat the Florida Atlantic Owls 11-7 on Wednesday night at FAU Baseball Stadium.
The Hurricanes (10-0) entered the final frame clinging to a 5-4 lead before erupting to secure their tenth consecutive victory to open the season. The Owls fell to 3-5.
The game’s most critical sequence came in the top of the ninth. After a leadoff walk to Jason Torres, Cuvet, the Hurricanes’ third baseman, launched a 1-2 pitch deep over the left field wall, extending Miami’s lead to 7-4. The blast seemed to break open a game that had been tight since the fourth inning.
Florida Atlantic had chipped away at an early 3-0 deficit, capitalizing on Miami mistakes. The Owls scored two unearned runs in the fourth on a two-out error by right fielder Blake Williams. They added single runs in the fifth on an RBI double by Christian Small and in the seventh on an RBI single from Dylan Patten, closing the gap to 5-4.
Miami’s bullpen, however, stifled a potential tying rally in the eighth. With the bases loaded and one out, reliever Ryan Bilka entered and struck out leadoff man Spencer Lipsey. An RBI single by Sam Ward made it 5-6, but a wild pitch allowed another run to score, cutting the lead to 7-5. Bilka then struck out John Leroux to end the threat, setting the stage for Miami’s offensive explosion.
Following Cuvet’s homer in the ninth, the Hurricanes loaded the bases against reliever Chris Boully. Brylan West cleared them with a two-run double, and Jake Ogden followed with a three-run double to left-center, capping the six-run outburst and providing the final margin.
The early story was dominant pitching. Miami starter Sebastian Santos-Olson was brilliant, tossing 4 1/3 innings of no-hit ball. He allowed one earned run, walked two and struck out four. His performance set the tone, lowering his ERA on the season.
Florida Atlantic starter Kide Adetuyi matched him for much of his outing, racking up 10 strikeouts over five innings while allowing two earned runs on six hits.
West led Miami’s 13-hit attack, going 3 for 5 with three RBIs. Ogden drove in three despite a 1-for-6 night, with his key double coming in the ninth. Cuvet finished 1 for 2 with the homer, two RBIs and three walks.
For the Owls, Lipsey and Small each had two doubles as part of Florida Atlantic’s 12-hit effort. Ward and Patten each drove in a run.
Bilka earned the win for Miami with two scoreless innings of relief, striking out four. Kyzer Smith took the loss for Florida Atlantic, allowing one run in 1 2/3 innings.
The Hurricanes open a three-game home series against Florida on Friday. The Owls begin a series against Villanova, also on Friday.
