Arizona State at Oklahoma

NORMAN, Okla. (Interstat) — In a dramatic reversal from the previous night’s blowout, the Oklahoma Sooners rallied with two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to stun the Arizona State Sun Devils 4-3 on Wednesday at L. Dale Mitchell Baseball Park.

The victory avenged a 15-3 loss to Arizona State on Tuesday and squared the record of both powerhouse programs at 8-1 this season.

The game’s decisive moment came in the final frame with the Sun Devils clinging to a 3-2 lead. Arizona State reliever Sean Fitzpatrick had been dominant, striking out the side in the seventh, but was lifted after recording an out in the eighth. In the ninth, Oklahoma’s Camden Johnson led off with a pivotal triple to left-center field off new pitcher Schaefer. Dakota Lachance followed by ripping a double down the left-field line, easily scoring Johnson to tie the game.

After a pinch-runner replaced Lachance, Sooners shortstop Jaxon Willits delivered the walk-off heroics, lashing another double down the left-field line to plate the winning run and ignite a home celebration.

The thrilling finish overshadowed a game defined by early offense and exceptional relief pitching. Arizona State ambushed Oklahoma starter Gavyn Jones in the first inning, batting around to score three runs. The rally was fueled by a double from Hairston, two walks, a fielding error and run-scoring plays from Longo, Roellig and Polk. Only one of the runs was earned.

Oklahoma began chipping away in the second when catcher Brendan Brock launched a solo home run. The Sooners added another run in the third on an RBI single from Johnson that scored C. Brumbaugh, cutting the deficit to 3-2.

From there, the bullpens took control. Arizona State’s Wyatt Halvorson was brilliant in relief, entering with two outs in the third and throwing 3 2/3 perfect innings, striking out three. Fitzpatrick continued the dominance with 1 1/3 perfect innings and three strikeouts.

Oklahoma’s relievers matched the effort. After Jones’ short start, Kadyn Leon provided three scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. Jason Bodin was even sharper, firing 2 2/3 hitless innings and striking out four. Jackson Cleveland closed out the ninth, working around two hits to keep the Sooners within one run and set the stage for the comeback.

Arizona State out-hit Oklahoma 7-6 but stranded critical opportunities, including two baserunners in the ninth. The Sun Devils also had two runners picked off and one caught stealing.

The win gives Oklahoma a significant momentum boost as both teams enter weekend series. Arizona State travels to Arlington, Texas, for the State Farm College Baseball Showdown, facing Mississippi State, Tennessee and Texas A&M. Oklahoma remains home to host Gonzaga for a three-game set.
