Miami (Ohio) at Southern Illinois

CARBONDALE, Ill. (Interstat) — The Miami (Ohio) Redhawks continued their dominant early-season surge Wednesday afternoon, dismantling the Southern Illinois Salukis 11-0 in a nonconference baseball game at Abe Martin Field.

The Redhawks, now 7-1, scored in four separate innings and used a parade of six pitchers to combine on a five-hit shutout. Southern Illinois fell to 1-6 with the loss, unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities and undone by a relentless Miami offense that tallied 11 hits.

The most important sequence of the game came in the top of the first inning, where Miami established immediate control. Leadoff hitter C. Raether worked a walk, advanced to third on a single by D. Krupinski, and scored on an RBI fielder’s choice by R. Novak. The Redhawks were not done, as Tommy Harrison and M. Dierks followed with consecutive run-scoring singles to stake Miami to a 3-0 lead before Southern Illinois recorded its third out.

That early cushion proved more than sufficient for Miami’s pitching staff. Starter Jake Tedesco worked a scoreless first inning before giving way to a bullpen that was flawless. Taylor Echols, Luke Ross, Cameron Novak, Marc Iozzo, Connor Preisel and Landon Fulk each contributed a scoreless inning of relief. The group collectively allowed just two hits and one walk over the final six frames, stranding Salukis runners in scoring position in the third and fourth innings.

The offensive star was Miami right fielder Tommy Harrison, who drove in four runs. He went 3 for 3 with a walk, including an RBI double in the third inning and a two-run home run to center field in the seventh that extended the lead to 8-0. Harrison is now 10 for 18 over his last five games with 10 RBIs.

Miami broke the game open with a three-run fourth inning, capitalizing on two walks, two singles and a key Salukis pitching change. Diego Cruz, who went 2 for 2 with an RBI, two walks and three stolen bases, singled and scored in the frame. The Redhawks added four more runs in the seventh, highlighted by Harrison’s homer and a pinch-hit RBI single from R. Kirtley.

Southern Illinois, which was projected by the Interstat ELO system to have a 61.5% chance to win, managed only five singles and a double. The Salukis put two runners in scoring position with one out in the fourth against Cameron Novak, but a lineout and a flyout ended the threat. Reliever Gio De Graauw provided a bright spot for Southern Illinois, striking out two in two-thirds of an inning of scoreless work.

The result defied the pregame simulation from Interstat, which had projected an 8-1 Miami victory. The Redhawks’ actual margin was wider, underscoring their current form.

Miami next travels to face Southeast Missouri State for a four-game series beginning Friday. Southern Illinois opens a three-game home set against Seton Hall on Friday.
