New Orleans at Southern

BATON ROUGE, La. (Interstat) — The New Orleans Privateers broke into the win column for the first time this season in emphatic fashion, erupting for a 14-5 victory over the Southern Jaguars on Wednesday night at Alex Box Stadium/Skip Bertman Field.

The Privateers, who entered the game 0-3 after being swept at Georgia State, unleashed a relentless offensive attack, amassing 11 hits and capitalizing on 14 walks issued by seven Southern pitchers. The Jaguars fell to 0-4, having been swept by Miami (Ohio) in their opening series.

The most important part of the game was the Privateers’ immediate and sustained offensive onslaught, which rendered the contest a foregone conclusion by the middle innings. New Orleans scored in each of the first four frames, building a commanding lead that Southern never threatened.

The tone was set in a decisive top of the second inning. Already leading 1-0, New Orleans sent 10 men to the plate against Southern starter K. Jack and reliever A. Lebron. The Privateers scored four runs on just one hit, leveraging three walks, a hit batter, and a key two-run single by Miles Curley. That sequence stretched the lead to 5-0 and chased Jack from the game after just 1 1/3 innings.

New Orleans continued to pour it on. In the third, K. Evan launched a two-run homer to make it 7-0. In the fourth, Kruise Newman connected for a two-run shot of his own, and another run scored on a wild pitch, pushing the advantage to 10-1.

Southern managed single runs in the second on a solo homer by X. Bradley and in the third on an RBI groundout from K. Byrd. The Jaguars added two more in the seventh on a two-run single by Gregory, jr., trimming the deficit to 10-4.

Any thought of a miraculous comeback was extinguished in the eighth inning when New Orleans pinch-hitter Owen Smith blasted a three-run homer to left-center field, part of a five-run outburst that put the game completely out of reach at 14-4. Southern added an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth to provide the final margin.

Dylan Biddick led the Privateers with three hits, while Curley drove in four runs. Smith finished with three RBIs on his lone swing, and Newman added two RBIs. Eight different Privateers scored at least one run.

For Southern, Bradley had two hits, including his home run, and Gregory, jr. drove in two. The Jaguars used eight pitchers, who combined to walk 14 batters and hit three more.

The win improved New Orleans to 1-3, while Southern dropped to 0-4. The result defied the pregame projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 3-2 Southern victory, though the service’s ELO rating system gave New Orleans a 75.7% probability to win.

New Orleans will host Alabama A&M on Friday to begin a three-game series. Southern travels to Vero Beach, Florida, to face Grambling on Friday as part of a weekend tournament. The two teams are scheduled to meet again next Wednesday in New Orleans.
