Texas-Arlington at Utah Valley
VINEYARD, Utah (Interstat) — The Western Athletic Conference series between Texas-Arlington and Utah Valley concludes Saturday at Brent Brown Ballpark, with both teams seeking a series win after the Wolverines routed the Mavericks 13-5 on Thursday. The Friday game was postponed.
First pitch is set for 1 p.m. MDT under cloudy skies with temperatures near 70 degrees.
Texas-Arlington (18-29) has lost seven of its last nine games and sits near the bottom of the WAC standings. The Mavericks’ pitching staff has struggled, allowing 13 runs in the series opener. Right-hander Caylon Dygert, who started Thursday and took the loss, is expected to be available in relief or as a starter again. Dygert has been inconsistent: he threw seven shutout innings against Utah Tech on May 8 but gave up five earned runs in 5⅓ innings against Utah Valley on Thursday. He also allowed six earned runs in 5⅓ innings at Abilene Christian on April 24. At the plate, Dygert has a .222 average over his last 10 games with one home run and four RBIs. Outfielder Xander McAfee drove in two runs Thursday.
Utah Valley (13-35) snapped a five-game losing streak with Thursday’s win. The Wolverines have the worst record in the WAC but showed offensive firepower, scoring 13 runs on 15 hits. Center fielder Kaden Carpenter led the way, going 4 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs. Carpenter has homered in three of his last six games and is batting .333 over that span. Catcher Mason Strong also went deep Thursday, driving in four runs. Right-hander Ray Hernandez earned the win, allowing three earned runs over six innings.
The Mavericks have dropped eight of their last 10 road games. Utah Valley is 7-17 at home.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 3-2 final in favor of Texas-Arlington, with ELO ratings giving the Mavericks a 52.2 percent probability to win. The series will mark the final regular-season meeting between the two programs before the WAC tournament.
Texas-Arlington will need better pitching and timely hitting to avoid dropping a second straight game to the last-place Wolverines. Utah Valley aims to build momentum behind Carpenter’s hot bat and a bullpen that held the Mavericks to one run over the final three innings Thursday.
Notes: The Mavericks are 2-9 in one-run games. Utah Valley is 0-7 in games decided by one run.
