Long Beach State at Cal Poly
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (Interstat) — Cal Poly hosts Long Beach State on Saturday evening at Robin Baggett Stadium in a Big West series finale, with the Mustangs looking to build on a dominant performance in the opener.
First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. under clear skies, with the temperature expected to be 73 degrees.
The Mustangs (31-21) enter with a comfortable advantage in the standings and a 17-game edge in victories over the Dirtbags (17-33). Cal Poly won Thursday’s series opener 11-3, powered by a strong start from right-hander Griffin Naess and a three-run homer from catcher Ryan Tayman. The teams also played Friday night; no result was immediately available for that contest.
Long Beach State has lost four straight, including the Thursday defeat and a three-game sweep at the hands of Oregon State last weekend. The Dirtbags’ offense struggled in those four games, scoring just 10 runs combined.
One bright spot for Long Beach State has been first baseman Conner Stewart. In Thursday’s loss, Stewart went 2 for 3 with a home run and an RBI. Over his last 10 games, he is batting .303 (10 for 33) with two homers and four RBIs, though he went hitless in two of the three games against Oregon State.
Cal Poly’s Naess is the player to watch for the home side. The right-hander earned the win Thursday, tossing six innings and allowing three earned runs on nine hits while striking out eight. In his four most recent starts, Naess has a 4.56 ERA across 22 2/3 innings with 25 strikeouts, though he struggled at UC Irvine on May 1, allowing five earned runs in 5 1/3 innings.
The Mustangs have won two in a row after Tuesday’s 15-10 victory at Fresno State. Cal Poly has been strong at the plate recently, averaging 8.3 runs over its last four games.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, Cal Poly is projected to win 7-4. The service’s ELO system gives the Mustangs a 72.50 percent probability of victory.
This is the final regular-season meeting between the two teams. Cal Poly is looking to solidify its position in the Big West standings, while Long Beach State aims to snap its losing streak and finish the season on a positive note.
