Wichita State at South Florida
TAMPA, Fla. (Interstat) — South Florida will seek to complete a series sweep when the Bulls host Wichita State on Saturday afternoon at USF Baseball Stadium.
The Bulls (31-20) have taken the first two games of the American Athletic Conference series, winning 4-1 on Thursday and 4-0 on Friday. The Shockers (24-26) are looking to avoid a three-game sweep.
First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. The forecast calls for 90-degree temperatures with cloudy skies.
South Florida right-hander Kaden Smith is a player to watch. In his start Thursday against Wichita State, Smith threw four scoreless innings, allowing no hits and striking out seven in a 4-1 victory. The performance followed a rough outing May 8 at Tulane, where he allowed six earned runs in four innings. However, Smith showed his potential April 19 against UAB, throwing seven shutout innings with six strikeouts.
Wichita State will counter with right-hander Matthew Cuccias. Cuccias started Thursday’s game, allowing four earned runs on zero hits in 6 2/3 innings, striking out five. He has been inconsistent recently, posting a 7.0-inning, eight-strikeout performance with no earned runs May 8 against Florida Atlantic, but also allowing two earned runs in 4 1/3 innings May 2 at Texas-San Antonio.
The Shockers have lost five of their last six games. They dropped two of three at Texas-San Antonio earlier this month and lost two of three at home to Florida Atlantic. South Florida has been more competitive, though the Bulls have lost four of their last seven after taking two of three at Tulane.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 3-2 South Florida victory, with the Bulls holding a 57.40 percent probability to win according to the ELO system.
The game will be the final regular-season meeting between the teams this season.
