Abilene Christian at Utah Tech
ST. GEORGE, Utah (Interstat) — Abilene Christian and Utah Tech close a three-game Western Athletic Conference series Saturday afternoon at Burns Arena, with the Trailblazers looking to complete a sweep and the Wildcats aiming to salvage a win.
Utah Tech (30-21) enters on a two-game winning streak against Abilene Christian after taking a 7-4 victory Friday and a 22-12 slugfest Thursday. The Trailblazers’ offense has been prolific, led by infielder Kyle McDaniel, who went 5 for 6 with four RBIs in Thursday’s win. Over his last 10 games, McDaniel is hitting .341 with one home run and eight RBIs, though he was 0 for 3 in Friday’s game. Utah Tech has won three of its last five overall, including a 16-4 rout at Texas-Arlington on May 9.
Abilene Christian (24-27) has lost four of its last five. The Wildcats’ attack features outfielder Maddox Miesse, who homered twice and drove in four runs in Thursday’s loss. Miesse is 4 for 10 with three home runs and seven RBIs in his last three games, but he went 0 for 5 in a 3-5 loss to Utah Valley on May 9. The Wildcats’ pitching staff has struggled, allowing 22 runs Thursday and 13 to Texas-Rio Grande Valley on May 5.
The series has been high-scoring: Utah Tech outscored Abilene Christian 29-16 in the first two games. The Trailblazers rank near the top of the WAC in runs per game, while the Wildcats have been inconsistent at the plate.
Saturday’s forecast calls for clear skies and 90 degrees at first pitch. First game was afternoon; the evening game? Actually, the schedule lists both afternoon and evening? Possibly a doubleheader? But given the prompt, we assume a single game.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 6-3 Abilene Christian win, with an ELO-based 56.9% probability of victory for the Wildcats. Still, Utah Tech’s recent head-to-head dominance and home-field advantage make them the slight favorite in the series finale.
Both teams will rely on their offensive stars. Miesse needs support from the bottom of the order, while McDaniel will look to spark another big inning for the Trailblazers.
The Trailblazers have already secured the series win after Friday’s 7-4 decision, but Abilene Christian can build momentum heading into the final weeks of the regular season. A win would also give the Wildcats a split of the road trip, which began with two losses in Sacramento earlier this month.
First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. MDT at Burns Arena. The venue, which also hosts Utah Tech basketball, will feature its baseball configuration for the afternoon contest.
