W Georgia at North Florida

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Interstat) — North Florida hosts West Georgia in an ASUN baseball matchup Saturday afternoon at John Sessions Stadium. First pitch is scheduled under partly cloudy skies with temperatures near 78 degrees.

The Ospreys (30-22 overall) enter the game having won the first two games of the three-game series, 6-5 on Thursday and 4-1 on Friday. North Florida has taken four of five meetings this season against the Wolves (13-40), including a three-game sweep in Carrollton, Georgia, in April.

Right-hander Dakota Stone is the projected starter for North Florida and has been dominant in his recent outings. In his last four starts, Stone has allowed two earned runs or fewer each time, including a six-inning, one-earned-run performance Friday against West Georgia. He struck out four and allowed two hits in that win. On May 8 at Queens (N.C.), Stone threw seven scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts. He also tossed seven innings of one-run ball against Jacksonville on May 1 and seven innings of two-run ball at Florida Gulf Coast on April 24. Stone’s season ERA sits well under 3.00, and he has been the rotation’s anchor.

West Georgia will counter with right-hander Rowan Park, who has been used in a variety of relief and spot-start roles. Park threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings Friday, allowing no hits and striking out two. He also worked four scoreless frames May 10 at Florida Gulf Coast, but took a loss. In his last seven appearances, Park has allowed runs in just two outings and has held opponents to a low batting average. His ability to limit damage will be critical against a North Florida lineup that has scored 12 runs in the past two games.

The Ospreys’ offense has been driven by shortstop Matthew Farner, who went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs in Friday’s win. The middle of the order has produced consistently during the series.

West Georgia’s lineup has struggled to generate runs, scoring only one run in Friday’s loss and five in Thursday’s defeat. The Wolves have lost 10 of their last 11 games and are last in the ASUN standings.

According to the Interstat game simulator, the projected final score is North Florida 5, West Georgia 2. The Interstat ELO system gives the Ospreys a 65.1 percent probability of winning.

The game is the final regular-season matchup between the two programs and will be the last home game of the season for North Florida. A win would give the Ospreys their 31st victory and solidify their position ahead of the ASUN tournament.
