Maryland-Eastern Shore at New Haven
WEST HAVEN, Conn. (Interstat) — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks (9-37) visit the University of New Haven Chargers (10-33) on Saturday in a Northeast Conference matchup at Charger Gymnasium. The game, scheduled for the afternoon and evening, faces a forecast of 64 degrees and rain.
The Hawks snapped an eight-game losing streak Friday with a 5-1 victory over New Haven, their first win since May 1. Pitcher Esteban Torres (6.0 IP, 0 H, 1 ER, 2 K) earned the win, and first baseman Diego Aponte went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. Henry Clausell added three scoreless innings of relief.
Torres has been a bright spot for Maryland Eastern Shore. Over his last four outings, the right-hander has allowed seven earned runs in 22 innings, striking out nine. On May 1 against Norfolk State, he threw six innings of three-run ball with four strikeouts in a 9-3 victory.
The Chargers have lost five of their last six games, including Friday’s defeat. Jace VanValkenburg pitched two innings of scoreless relief Friday, allowing one hit and striking out two. In his previous appearance May 8 against Delaware State, he tossed 5.1 innings of one-hit ball with one strikeout, though New Haven lost 6-4. VanValkenburg has struggled with command at times, issuing walks in three of his last four appearances.
New Haven’s Maxwell Hilsenroth took the loss Friday despite a solid start: seven innings, nine hits, four earned runs and six strikeouts. Center fielder Nick Ungania went 1-for-4.
The series continues a trend of low-scoring games between the two clubs. In Friday’s doubleheader, the teams combined for seven runs over 18 innings, with New Haven being shut out in the first game. The Hawks’ offense has averaged 5.0 runs over their last 10 games but has surrendered 9.9 runs per game in that span.
The Interstat game simulator projects a 4-1 victory for New Haven.
First pitch is set for Saturday, with the rain potentially affecting game time. Both teams will look for pitching to carry them as they try to build momentum in the Northeast standings.
