Dayton at George Washington

ARLINGTON, Va. (Interstat) — Riley Cahill pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings of one-hit relief and Danny MacDougall drove in three runs with a home run and a single as the Dayton Flyers defeated the George Washington Revolutionaries 6-2 on Saturday afternoon at Barcroft Park.

Dayton won its third straight game in the Atlantic 10 series, improving to 31-23 overall. George Washington dropped its fourth in a row and fell to 18-35.

The Flyers struck first in the second inning when Jason Bello hit a solo home run to left field. Dayton added four runs in the fifth to break the game open. After a sacrifice fly by David Wouters pushed the lead to 4-1, MacDougall launched a two-run homer to left, scoring Gabe Carpenter. Later in the inning, a throwing error by the Revolutionaries’ third baseman allowed Smith to score on another RBI groundout by Wouters, making it 6-1.

George Washington scored its first run in the bottom of the first on an unearned run after two hit batsmen and a throwing error by Dayton pitcher J. Heller. The Revolutionaries cut the lead to 6-2 in the fifth when G. Marmo doubled to left-center, scoring M. Bravette, who had entered as a pinch runner after a walk and a stolen base.

But Cahill, who entered in the fourth inning, neutralized the George Washington offense. He allowed only one hit and struck out four over 3 1/3 innings, scattering a walk and stranding two runners in the seventh. Michael Fortes followed with 2 1/3 perfect innings, striking out two. Lucas Collins and Niklas Pavia also tossed scoreless frames for Dayton.

The most pivotal stretch came in the top of the fifth. With the game tied at 1-1 after George Washington’s early unearned run, Dayton loaded the bases on a single by A. Sardinas and a fielder’s choice. MacDougall then crushed a 1-0 pitch over the left-field wall, giving the Flyers a three-run lead. Smith added a stolen base and later scored on a groundout, providing a four-run cushion that the Revolutionaries never threatened.

Dayton’s pitching staff combined to allow only two runs — one earned — while striking out nine and walking five. George Washington starter Colin Lebel took the loss, allowing two runs on two hits in two innings. The Revolutionaries used six pitchers; Henry Knighton tossed two scoreless innings with one hit allowed and one strikeout.

The game marked the final contest of a three-game series that began Thursday. Dayton won the opener 9-1 and took the second game 7-5 in 11 innings Friday. The Flyers have now won five of their last six games overall after a midweek loss to Notre Dame.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Dayton 6, George Washington 1, and the ELO system gave Dayton a 61 percent probability to win.
