Saint Peter`s at Rider
LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Interstat) — The Rider Broncs will look to complete a three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference sweep of Saint Peter’s on Saturday afternoon at Sonny Pittaro Field, where a 60-degree, cloudy afternoon is in the forecast.
Rider (28-17 overall) enters the 4 p.m. contest on a two-game winning streak after edging the Peacocks 4-3 on Friday and routing them 11-2 on Thursday. The Broncs have won 10 of their last 13 games and are firmly in the MAAC title chase. Saint Peter’s (5-46), meanwhile, has lost 16 straight and 34 of its last 35.
Right-hander Kyle Batt (0-1, 5.29 ERA) is scheduled to start for Rider. In Friday’s victory over Saint Peter’s, Batt scattered eight hits over 5⅓ innings, allowing two earned runs while striking out five. His most dominant outing came May 2 at Niagara, where he fired five shutout innings with four strikeouts in a 26-2 blowout. But Batt has been inconsistent: He lasted only three innings at Quinnipiac on May 8 (three earned runs, one strikeout) and was tagged for five earned runs in 2⅔ innings at Monmouth on April 26.
Saint Peter’s will counter with right-hander James Ellis (0-6, 12.69 ERA), who also started Friday’s 4-3 loss. Ellis worked six innings, allowing three earned runs on no hits — but walked four and struck out one. The Peacocks’ bullpen gave up the deciding run. Ellis has surrendered 16 earned runs over his last four appearances (13⅓ innings), including a disastrous outing May 10 against Merrimack (2⅓ IP, 10 hits, 9 earned runs) and a May 2 start at Siena (1 IP, 0 hits, 5 earned runs, 5 walks).
Offensively, Rider’s lineup has been productive, scoring 26 runs in a single game May 2. First baseman Bobby Lavely went 3-for-5 with an RBI for Saint Peter’s on Friday, one of the few bright spots for the Peacocks, who have scored three or fewer runs in eight of their last 10 games.
The most productive player for Rider on Friday was reliever Jake Dorety, who threw 2⅔ scoreless innings, and closer Connor Flynn earned the save with a perfect ninth.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, the projected final score is Rider 7, Saint Peter’s 1, with the Broncs given a 92.2 percent probability of winning.
First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
