Troy at Louisiana-Monroe
MONROE, La. (Interstat) — Blake Cavill hit two grand slams and drove in nine runs Saturday afternoon as Troy routed Louisiana-Monroe 13-3 at Warhawk Field, snapping a one-game losing streak and taking the series finale.
Cavill, a first baseman, went 3 for 5 with his ninth and 10th home runs of the season. He delivered the first grand slam in the top of the second inning, a four-run blast that turned a 1-0 lead into a 7-0 advantage. Jimmy Janicki followed with a solo homer, his 17th, to cap a six-run frame. Cavill struck again in the third inning with another bases-loaded homer, scoring four more runs and extending the lead to 12-2.
Drew Nelson added a solo home run in the third, his fifth of the season, and finished 2 for 4 with two runs scored. Jabe Boroff homered in the seventh, his fourth, and drove in one run. Troy totaled 12 hits and drew nine walks.
Louisiana-Monroe, which had won the series opener 12-2 on Friday, could not keep pace. The Warhawks scored once in the second inning on a two-run double by Davis Mauzy and a wild pitch, then added a run in the third on a sacrifice fly by White. Mauzy finished 3 for 4 with an RBI. ULM managed six hits and left 10 runners on base.
Troy starter Hayden Smith lasted 1 1/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on zero hits with a walk and a strikeout. Dylan Alonso relieved and threw 3 2/3 scoreless innings, surrendering zero hits while striking out three and allowing one earned run due to a wild pitch. Zach Crotchfelt worked a scoreless sixth, and Noah Thigpen struck out two in a perfect seventh to close the game.
Adam Tubbs provided the brightest spot for the Warhawks bullpen, tossing four innings of relief. He allowed five hits and one earned run while striking out four, but by the time he entered in the fourth, Troy already led 12-3.
The game’s decisive moment came in the second inning. After Nelson and Darnell singled, Markham walked and Piasecki drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run, Cavill launched his first grand slam to left-center field. Janicki’s solo shot made it 7-0 and all but sealed the outcome.
Troy improved to 29-27 overall and 17-13 in Sun Belt play. Louisiana-Monroe fell to 27-28 and 13-17 in the conference. The Trojans won two of three in the weekend series after dropping Thursday’s opener 6-4 and losing 12-2 on Friday.
Cavill entered the game in a mild slump, having gone 0 for 5 on Thursday and 1 for 2 on Friday. He had driven in two runs in a win over South Alabama on May 10 and had one RBI in a road victory at UAB on May 12.
Interstat’s game simulator projected a final score of Troy 6, Louisiana-Monroe 4. Interstat’s ELO system gave Troy a 70.20 percent probability to win. The actual result far exceeded both projections, powered by Cavill’s historic afternoon.
