Memphis at Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Interstat) — David Case took a no-hitter into the seventh inning for Memphis, but a six-run bottom of the seventh by Charlotte turned the game on its head and sent the 49ers to an 8-2 victory over the Tigers in American Athletic Conference play Friday night at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium.

Case was brilliant for Memphis through six innings, striking out six and allowing no hits and no runs. He retired 18 of the 21 batters he faced, with the only baserunners coming on a hit batter, a walk and a strikeout that reached on a wild pitch — all wiped out by the defense. The Tigers gave him a 2-0 lead in the top of the sixth when Javon Hernandez walked and scored on a double by Smith IV off Charlotte starter Eddie Copper. Copper entered the game with a 1-0 record and a 4.76 ERA over his previous three appearances but had surrendered four earned runs in a loss to UAB on May 9. Friday, he was nearly as sharp as Case, allowing two hits and one earned run in 5 2/3 innings while striking out six.

Charlotte’s offense finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Alec DeMartino reached on a throwing error by Memphis third baseman. Todd Hudson followed with a two-run homer to right field — both runs unearned — to tie the score 2-2.

The decisive frame came in the seventh. Memphis brought in reliever Sawyer Oswalt to replace Case. Oswalt walked D. Koontz, then allowed a bunt single to A. Jimenez and a single to C. Stricklin to load the bases. S. Nolan reached on a fielder’s choice to third that resulted in a throwing error by the third baseman, allowing two runs to score and giving Charlotte a 4-2 lead. Robert Nedry followed with an RBI single. After a pitching change to Nolan McCracken, D. Bryce hit a sacrifice fly to center field. McCracken then threw a wild pitch, Nedry stole third and DeMartino singled him home, extending the lead to 7-2. C. Gunderson capped the rally with an RBI single down the left-field line.

Charlotte added one more in the seventh when DeMartino scored on Gunderson’s hit, making it 8-2. The 49ers finished with eight hits, while Memphis managed only three — a sixth-inning double by Smith IV and ninth-inning singles by Cassidy and Watson and a pinch-hit single by Boyd.

Charlotte starter Copper was the winning pitcher. Joseph Taylor worked three innings of relief, allowing one earned run on three hits with three strikeouts. Chase Carson recorded the final out of the ninth. For Memphis, Case took a no-decision. Brayden Sanders pitched a scoreless eighth, while McCracken allowed one earned run in his inning.

The Tigers dropped to 22-31 overall and 7-11 in the AAC, while Charlotte improved to 27-27 and 9-9.

Memphis had won the opener of the three-game series Thursday 9-4. The Tigers had lost Tuesday at Middle Tennessee 10-9 before sweeping Texas-San Antonio at home over the weekend. Charlotte had beaten Gardner-Webb 11-1 on Tuesday after losing two of three at UAB.

The Interstat game simulator projected a final score of Charlotte 7, Memphis 5. Interstat’s ELO system gave the 49ers a 70.60 percent probability to win.
