Penn State at Maryland
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (Interstat) — The Maryland Terrapins host the Penn State Nittany Lions in a Big Ten baseball matchup Friday afternoon at Shipley Field, with first pitch under cloudy skies and a temperature of 61 degrees.
Maryland (24-27) enters the game after a 21-6 rout of Georgetown on Tuesday, while Penn State (15-33) arrives on a six-game losing streak, most recently a 11-7 defeat at Pittsburgh.
The Nittany Lions will look to third baseman Spencer Barnett to spark a struggling offense. Barnett homered twice with two RBIs in that loss to Pittsburgh, going 2-for-4. However, the performance followed an inconsistent stretch: he was 1-for-3 in a shutout win over Washington on May 9, but 0-for-4 in the front end of a doubleheader the day before. Over his last 10 games, Barnett has three multi-hit performances and three home runs, but also five hitless games.
Penn State’s lineup has managed just six runs in its past three outings combined after splitting a doubleheader with Washington on May 8.
Maryland counter with first baseman Paul Jones II, who erupted for three home runs and 11 RBIs in Tuesday’s win over the Hoyas, finishing 3-for-4. The performance extended a hot streak: Jones went 3-for-4 with two RBIs at Towson on May 5 and homered against Georgetown on April 28. Still, he has been prone to cold spells, going hitless in three of his previous five games entering Tuesday, including an 0-for-5 in a loss to Michigan.
The Terrapins have won three of their last four overall, powered by an offense that scored 23 runs at Towson on May 5 and 11 at Georgetown on April 28.
Penn State and Maryland met Thursday in the series opener, with no score provided. The teams conclude the series Saturday.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 4-3 Maryland victory.
