Manhattan at Iona
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (Interstat) — Braedon Romero tossed five innings of no-hit ball and Vincent Samuel drove in three runs as the Manhattan Jaspers defeated the Iona Gaels 6-3 on Friday afternoon at City Park in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game.
Romero, the top star for Manhattan, allowed two earned runs on no hits while striking out five over five innings. He walked two and hit a batter but escaped further damage despite not giving up a hit. The right-hander improved to a record not specified, building on his recent outings that included a tough loss against Niagara and a scoreless three-inning stint at Dartmouth.
Samuel went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs. His two-run homer to left field in the top of the third inning gave Manhattan a 4-2 lead after the Jaspers had already scored once in the second. Samuel also doubled and scored in the ninth.
Hunter Sute added two hits and an RBI, and Ryan Lordier tripled and drove in a run for Manhattan, which improved to 20-28 overall. The Jaspers collected 12 hits, while Iona had 10.
Iona dropped to 18-28. The Gaels struck first in the bottom of the second when Chavis Conceicao singled down the left-field line to drive in two runs after a walk, a single and a wild pitch had put runners on base. Iona cut the deficit to 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single by pinch-hitter Jake Lenski, but Manhattan answered with two runs in the top of the ninth.
In the ninth, Samuel doubled home a pinch-runner and later scored on a sacrifice bunt. Andrew Brown threw two scoreless innings of relief, striking out one, and Garrett Theile recorded the final five outs while allowing one run.
Iona starter Luke Lang took the loss, allowing three earned runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts over five innings. Justin Trinidad gave up three runs in three innings of relief. Tyler Lender pitched a scoreless ninth.
The game was the second of a three-game series between the Metro Atlantic rivals, with Iona winning 7-2 on Thursday. The teams meet again Saturday.
Interstat’s game simulator projected a final score of Manhattan 5, Iona 3, and Interstat’s ELO system gave Manhattan a 59.80 percent probability to win.
