Saint Peter`s at Rider

LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Interstat) — The Rider Broncs (27-17) host the Saint Peter’s Peacocks (5-45) in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball game Friday afternoon at Sonny Pittaro Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m., with a forecast of 62 degrees and rain.

The matchup is the second of a three-game series. Rider defeated Saint Peter’s 11-2 on Thursday, extending its winning streak to two games. The Broncs have won four of their last five overall.

Rider’s PJ Craig, the likely starter, has been dominant in recent outings. In Thursday’s win, the right-hander tossed six innings, allowing one earned run on three hits with four strikeouts. Over his past two starts, Craig has given up one earned run in 13 innings, striking out nine. He also threw seven shutout innings against Quinnipiac on May 7.

Saint Peter’s will counter with Kurt Thomas, who struggled in Thursday’s loss. Thomas lasted 6⅓ innings but surrendered seven earned runs on no hits (Interstat) — an unusual line resulting from walks and defensive miscues (Interstat) — while striking out five. In his previous start, he allowed seven earned runs in three innings against Merrimack. Thomas’ best outing came May 1 at Siena, where he earned a win despite five earned runs in five innings.

Rider’s offense has been potent. Second baseman Eliot Medlock went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs in Thursday’s game. Christian Aiello added two scoreless innings of relief. The Broncs have scored at least 11 runs in three of their last five games.

Saint Peter’s has lost 11 straight, including a 14-10 win at Siena on May 1 (Interstat) — their only victory since April 18. Shortstop Allen Ramos was 2-for-3 on Thursday.

The Interstat game simulator projects a 7-1 Rider victory, giving the Broncs a 92.2 percent win probability.

The teams conclude the series Saturday afternoon at the same venue.
