AKRON, Ohio (Interstat) — Tommy Harrison went 5-for-5 with two home runs and five RBIs, powering Miami (Ohio) to a 13-3 victory over Akron in a Mid-American Conference game Friday afternoon at InfoCision Stadium.
The Redhawks, who won for the seventh time in eight games, improved to 37-15 overall and remained atop the MAC standings. The Zips dropped to 20-33.
Harrison, Miami’s right fielder, reached base in every plate appearance. He opened the scoring in the first inning with an RBI single that preceded a two-run homer by Ignacio Gonzalez, then added a two-run homer in the second inning and a solo shot in the sixth. He capped his day with a two-run single in the seventh inning.
All five of Harrison’s hits drove in runs, and he raised his season batting average by more than 20 points during the series. He had driven in five runs in the Redhawks’ 17-6 win over Akron the previous day.
Miami starting pitcher Clayton Burke earned the win, throwing seven innings of three-hit ball. Burke allowed three earned runs while striking out five.
The Redhawks jumped on Akron starter Elijah Griffith immediately. After a leadoff flyout, Evan Appelwick doubled and scored on a groundout by Ryan Novak. Gonzalez then homered to make it 3-0.
Akron’s best chance to rally came in the bottom of the third inning. Kyle McConachie doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit to 6-1. But Burke stranded the bases empty, and Miami answered with a five-run third inning highlighted by a two-run homer from Dominic Krupinski.
Akron second baseman Blake Bowen provided the Zips’ only real offense. He homered in the fourth inning and again in the sixth, giving him two home runs and two RBIs in a 2-for-3 performance. McConachie also had two hits for Akron.
Miami broke the game open with four runs in the seventh inning, aided by two Akron errors. Harrison’s two-run single capped the scoring.
The Redhawks pounded out 14 hits. Gonzalez finished 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs. Novak added a solo home run in the sixth inning, his 1-for-4 day including two RBIs. Krupinski went 1-for-2 with a homer and two RBIs, and Christopher Roa drove in a run with a double.
Akron reliever Taylor Bednar threw two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out one.
Miami has now won the first two games of the three-game series, having outscored Akron 30-9. The teams meet again Saturday for the series finale.
