Ohio State at Michigan
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Interstat) — Gavin Kuzniewski tossed six innings of no-hit ball and Ohio State’s offense erupted for seven runs to power the Buckeyes past Michigan 7-3 on Friday afternoon at Ray Fisher Stadium in a Big Ten clash.
Kuzniewski, coming off a victory against Michigan State on May 8 in which he allowed five hits and three earned runs over six innings, improved his recent form by holding the Wolverines hitless through his entire outing. He issued three earned runs on walks, hit batters and defensive miscues, striking out three. Lincoln McVicker followed with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, fanning three, and Luke Carrell recorded the final out.
Ohio State improved to 28-23 overall, while Michigan dropped to 32-21.
The Buckeyes struck first in the top of the second inning. With two outs, Ellis singled to center field to drive in Harvey, who had reached on a single and advanced to third on a groundout. That gave Ohio State a 1-0 lead.
Michigan answered in the bottom half. Miller singled, Ossenfort doubled, and Laffitte was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Morrow reached on a fielder’s choice, scoring Miller. Culbertson followed with a sacrifice bunt to plate Ossenfort, putting the Wolverines ahead 2-1.
Ohio State regained the lead in the fifth when Grant Mangrum homered to deep left field, his fourth of the season, tying the game at 2-2.
The Buckeyes broke the game open in the sixth. Kaczmar singled, Furcht singled, and Harvey delivered an RBI single to right center. Simpson added a sacrifice fly to score Furcht, making it 4-2. An inning later, Ohio State padded its lead. Bemis, who walked earlier, scored on a double by Kaczmar. After an intentional walk to Harvey, Eckelman walked and Ellis was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Mangrum was also hit by a pitch to force in a run. Bemis then singled through the left side, driving in two runs, and Furcht lifted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Mangrum. The Buckeyes led 7-2.
Michigan’s Brayden Jefferis homered to right field in the sixth, his third of the season, cutting the deficit to 7-3. McVicker retired the side in the seventh and the eighth before Carrell closed the ninth, stranding the bases loaded.
Buckeyes left fielder Alex Bemis went 1 for 2 with two RBIs and two walks. Mangrum added a home run. For Michigan, Matthew Ossenfort had two hits, including a double, and Jefferis homered.
Shane Brinham started for Michigan and took the loss, allowing four earned runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings with four strikeouts. Slade Moore, Keegan O’Hearn and DeVooght worked in relief.
The win followed Ohio State’s 13-2 victory over Michigan on Thursday, giving the Buckeyes consecutive wins in the series. Michigan had lost its previous game to Kent State on Tuesday.
The Buckeyes will return to Ray Fisher Stadium on Saturday for the series finale. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 7-6 final score in favor of Michigan, and Interstat’s ELO system gave the Wolverines a 67.80 percent probability to win.
