Cal State Bakersfield at UC Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. (Interstat) — Trevor Hansen struck out 10 over 5 1/3 innings and UC Irvine scored five runs in the third to defeat Cal State Bakersfield 6-3 on Thursday at Anteater Ballpark.

Hansen allowed three runs on three hits, walked two and earned the win after a rocky outing earlier in the week. In his previous start May 8 at UC Riverside, he gave up four earned runs in five innings but received a victory. On Thursday, he retired the side in order in the first, worked around a two-out single in the second and struck out the side in the fourth before exiting after the fifth.

The Anteaters improved to 24-24 overall. The Roadrunners dropped to 21-30.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third. UC Irvine loaded the bases on a walk by Zach Fjelstad and a double by Trey Farmer. Theo Kim singled to right center, driving in Fjelstad and Farmer to make it 2-0. Daniel Polasek walked, and after a flyout, Lucas Schermer doubled to right center, scoring Kim and Polasek for a 4-0 lead. Efren Ortega followed with an RBI single to center that brought home Schermer, pushing the advantage to 5-0.

UC Irvine added a run in the fourth. Fjelstad singled, Farmer walked, and after a sacrifice bunt by Kim and a hit by pitch to Polasek, Frankie Carney reached on a fielder’s choice that scored Fjelstad, making it 6-0.

Cal State Bakersfield rallied in the top of the sixth. With one out, Matthew Cloyd singled and was followed by a hit by pitch to Dawson Wilkes. After a walk to Anthony Bennett loaded the bases, Yadier Acevedo singled to center, driving in Cloyd and Wilkes. A groundout by Andrew Pelayo brought in Bennett, cutting the deficit to 6-3.

Ricky Ojeda relieved Hansen with two on and two out in the sixth and got a flyout to end the threat. Ojeda then pitched 3 2/3 hitless innings, striking out five and allowing only a walk. He preserved the three-run lead with ease.

For the Roadrunners, starter Ethan Myers lasted 2 2/3 innings and allowed five runs on four hits. Saul Bolivar followed with 3 1/3 innings of hitless relief, allowing an unearned run, and CJ Brown threw two hitless innings with one strikeout.

UC Irvine finished with 10 hits. Polasek went 2 for 2 with two walks. Kim was 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Schermer drove in two runs. Carney had an RBI despite an 0-for-5 day at the plate.

Cal State Bakersfield managed four hits. Acevedo had two RBIs. Thompson B. doubled in the seventh but was left stranded.

The Roadrunners committed two errors in the field, including a dropped fly ball in the second inning that did not lead to a run. The Anteaters turned two double plays.
