Nebraska at Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS (Interstat) — Carson Jasa tossed 4 2/3 no-hit innings but was charged with four earned runs in a puzzling start as the Nebraska Cornhuskers defeated the Minnesota Golden Gophers 12-7 on Thursday at Siebert Field in a Big Ten baseball matchup.

Jasa struck out seven and walked three, hit a batter and unleashed a wild pitch, leading to the four runs despite not surrendering a hit. The right-hander improved to 6-1 after Nebraska’s offense erupted for seven runs in the sixth inning to blow open a one-run game. Jasa’s previous outing was a seven-inning, two-hit shutout with nine strikeouts against Iowa on May 8.

Nebraska, which entered with a 39-14 record, banged out 15 hits. Third baseman Josh Overbeek went 2 for 5 with three RBIs, including a two-run double in the seventh. Center fielder Mac Moyer added two hits and two RBIs, and left fielder Devin Grego finished with three hits and an RBI.

Minnesota, now 30-21, managed eight hits. Shortstop Jack Spanier and designated hitter Brayden Hellum each had two hits and two RBIs. Spanier doubled in a pair in the sixth.

The game remained scoreless until the third, when Moyer doubled home Tucker Fikes to give Nebraska a 1-0 lead. Minnesota answered in the fourth, scoring twice on a double by Hellum and a single by Ty Allen to take a 2-1 edge.

Nebraska reclaimed control with a seven-run sixth. Moyer, Gage Worthley and Devin Grego all reached before a double by Dillon Carey cleared the bases, with an error allowing an additional run. Grego scored on a Moyer bases-loaded hit-by-pitch, and Worthley followed with a two-run single. The outburst gave Nebraska an 8-2 lead.

Minnesota responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on Spanier’s double, but Nebraska added four more in the seventh. Grego doubled home a run, Overbeek doubled in two, and Rhett Stokes singled in another, stretching the margin to 12-4.

The Golden Gophers scratched across a run in the seventh on a groundout by Jack Bello after Hellum tripled, but they could not mount a serious comeback. Closer Pryce Bender retired the side in order in the ninth, striking out one in a perfect inning.

Nebraska used four pitchers after Jasa. Tucker Timmerman worked three innings, allowing one run on one hit while striking out two. Minnesota’s bullpen was led by Josh Kirchhoff, who fanned three in two scoreless innings.

The Cornhuskers have now won six of their past seven games, including a midweek win at Creighton on Tuesday. Minnesota had taken two of three from Michigan last weekend but dropped the series opener to Nebraska.

Nebraska and Minnesota play the second game of the three-game series Friday, followed by the finale Saturday.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Nebraska 8, Minnesota 7, and its ELO model gave the Cornhuskers a 65.50 percent probability to win. Nebraska entered the game as a pregame favorite with a spread of plus-1.5.
