Dayton at George Washington

ARLINGTON, Va. (Interstat) — Sawyer Jensen threw a complete game, allowing no hits and one earned run with four strikeouts, and the Dayton Flyers defeated the George Washington Revolutionaries 9-1 in an Atlantic 10 matchup Thursday afternoon at Barcroft Park.

Jensen’s performance was the highlight of a game that saw Dayton’s offense erupt for nine runs on nine hits, while George Washington managed only five hits and stranded multiple baserunners. The Flyers improved to 29-23, while the Revolutionaries fell to 18-33.

Dayton jumped ahead in the second inning. Jason Bello was hit by a pitch, and Colin Lynch followed with a home run down the left-field line, scoring Bello to make it 2-0. Danny MacDougall added a solo home run to left center in the third, extending the lead to 3-0.

George Washington answered in the bottom of the first, with J. Kent singling, advancing on a throwing error, and scoring on R. Lavey’s single to center, cutting the deficit to 3-1. However, that was the only run the Revolutionaries would score. Jensen retired 14 of the next 15 batters after the first inning, allowing just a single to C. Dewey in the third and a single to C. Tufano in the sixth but never letting a runner reach third.

Dayton padded its lead in the fourth. After a walk and a single, MacDougall hit a sacrifice fly to left to score M. Lucarelli, making it 4-1. In the sixth, Michael Smith homered to left center, pushing the lead to 5-1.

The Flyers broke the game open in the seventh. Bello walked, and Bobby Stang hit a two-run homer to left, making it 7-1. Dayton added two more in the eighth on a bases-loaded walk to Bello and a single by Stang, scoring three runs overall as the Revolutionaries cycled through four pitchers.

Jensen, who had allowed five earned runs in each of his previous two starts — a win over George Mason on May 8 and a win over La Salle on May 1 — was in command from the second inning on. He faced the minimum over the final six innings, striking out four and walking two.

For Dayton, Stang finished 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs. MacDougall was 1 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs. Lynch and Smith each homered and drove in one run. Bello drove in one run and scored three times.

For George Washington, starting pitcher Max Haug took the loss, allowing eight hits and seven earned runs over six innings with seven strikeouts. Aidan Carey pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings, and Jasper Nadel threw a scoreless inning. The Revolutionaries’ offense was limited to singles by Kent, Dewey, Lavey and Tufano.

The game was the first of a three-game series. Dayton and George Washington meet again Friday and Saturday at Barcroft Park.

Interstat’s game simulator projected a final score of Dayton 7, George Washington 1, and its ELO system gave Dayton a 59.40 percent probability to win.
