Mississippi Valley State at Prairie View
HEMPSTEAD, Texas (Interstat) — Isaac Herrera tossed eight innings of shutout ball and the Prairie View Panthers pounded out 19 hits in an 11-1 victory over the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils on Thursday afternoon and evening at Tankersley Field in a Southwestern Athletic Conference matchup.
Herrera allowed nine hits but did not yield an earned run while striking out six. He walked none and needed only 99 pitches to complete his outing, improving to 3-2 on the season. The senior right-hander lowered his ERA to 3.86 after a dominant stretch that included a six-inning, seven-strikeout win at Alcorn State on May 8.
Prairie View’s offense supported Herrera with a relentless attack that produced runs in six of eight innings. The Panthers scored two in the first, one in the fifth, four in the sixth, two in the seventh and two more in the eighth to blow open a game that was tied at 1-1 after the top of the fifth.
Mississippi Valley State took its only lead in the top of the fifth when Gabe Huelsing singled to left-center, scoring Tanner Aoki from third. Aoki had reached on a two-base error by the Panthers second baseman, and the unearned run made it 1-0. But Prairie View answered immediately in the bottom half.
Daniel Scott started for Mississippi Valley State and labored through 4 1/3 innings. He allowed five earned runs on zero hits — an unusual line produced by four walks, a hit batter and two errors that extended innings. Scott struck out four but issued three free passes. Camden Farmer, Matthew Cuzco, Eric Torrero and Park Roeder followed in relief, combining to allow six runs on 10 hits over the final 3 2/3 innings.
The game turned decisively in the bottom of the fifth. With the Delta Devils leading 1-0, Prairie View loaded the bases on a walk and two singles. Michael Burroughs scored on a base hit by Basilio Williams, and after a stolen base and a groundout, Corie Lockette scored on a fielder’s choice. Deshon Middleton followed with an RBI single up the middle to give the Panthers a 3-1 lead.
Prairie View broke the game open in the sixth. Ty Moore and Ryland Duson singled, and Zacarias Salinas loaded the bases with another single. Burroughs then ripped a double to right field that cleared the bases, though an error by the third baseman allowed an additional run, making it 7-1. Duson, Moore and Salinas each scored on the play.
The Panthers added two more in the seventh. Middleton walked, stole second and scored on a double by Duson. Salinas then lifted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Ethan Walker, who had singled and stolen second. In the eighth, Prairie View pushed across two more runs on a walk, a hit batter and singles by Basilio Williams and John Lawson before Ethan Walker walked with the bases loaded, forcing in a run, and Ty Moore added a sacrifice fly.
Nine different Panthers collected hits. Walker, Moore and Duson each went 3-for-5. Walker scored three runs, Moore drove in two and Duson had two RBIs. Salinas finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Burroughs doubled and drove in a run.
For Mississippi Valley State, Kendall Brookins led the offense with three singles. Ty Burns doubled and drove in a run. The Delta Devils managed nine hits total but stranded eight baserunners and struck out eight times. The loss dropped Mississippi Valley State to 12-34 overall and 5-20 in SWAC play. The Delta Devils had lost 11 of their previous 12 games entering Thursday.
Prairie View improved to 10-34 overall and 7-18 in conference. The Panthers snapped a two-game losing streak and won for just the third time in their last 10 outings. The two teams are scheduled to meet again Friday and Saturday at Tankersley Field to close the three-game series.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of 1-7, and its ELO system gave Prairie View a 67.80 percent probability to win.
