Gardner-Webb at Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Interstat) — The Charlotte 49ers (25-26) host the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs (23-28) on Tuesday, May 12, at 6 p.m. at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium. The forecast calls for 67 degrees and cloudy skies.

Charlotte enters the midweek nonconference matchup coming off a dramatic 10-8, 10-inning victory Sunday at UAB. Right fielder Alec DeMartino went 3-for-5 with two home runs and four RBIs in that win, continuing a productive stretch. Over his last five games, DeMartino is 9-for-24 (.375) with four homers and 12 RBIs.

Gardner-Webb also arrives with momentum, having edged Bradley 7-6 on Saturday. Third baseman Matt Ilgenfritz led the way, going 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Pitcher Josh Gentile threw four scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out four.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs have split their last four games, alternating wins and losses. They have struggled on the road, going 2-5 in their last seven away contests. Gardner-Webb’s offense has been inconsistent, scoring two or fewer runs in three of its last five games but also putting up eight and 10 in two other outings.

Charlotte has won four of its last five, including a 20-2 rout of UAB on Friday. The 49ers’ pitching has been volatile, allowing 15 runs in a loss to Campbell on May 5 but holding Tulane to three runs in a win the next day.

Ethan Liao is a player to watch for Gardner-Webb. The outfielder has been streaky, going 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs in a May 9 loss to Campbell, but he is 0-for-3 in his last two games combined. Liao is batting .263 over his last 10 games with two homers and seven RBIs.

For Charlotte, DeMartino leads the attack. He has homered in three of his last four games and driven in at least one run in five of his last six. His .320 average and team-high 12 home runs make him a constant threat.

The Interstat game simulator projects a 6-5 Charlotte win.

NOTES: Gardner-Webb hosts Presbyterian for a three-game series starting Thursday. Charlotte welcomes Memphis for a three-game set beginning Thursday.
