UC San Diego at Cal State Bakersfield
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (Interstat) — Nathan Ries pitched four innings of one-hit ball and the UC San Diego Tritons pounded out 14 hits in a 15-2 victory over the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners on Sunday evening at Hardt Field.
Ries, who struck out two and allowed one earned run, improved to a combined seven scoreless innings over his previous two outings before surrendering the lone run in the third inning. He worked around a walk and a single in the first, then retired the side in order in the second. In the third, Ries yielded a leadoff walk and a single before a caught stealing allowed the Roadrunners’ first run to score. He struck out the next batter to end the inning and did not face another hitter.
J.C. Allen went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, including a two-run double in the first inning that opened the scoring. Gabe Camacho added three hits and an RBI, and Austin Bowker, Kayden Henson, Julian Cazares and Trevor Rector combined for five innings of one-hit relief, with Henson and Cazares each striking out two.
The Tritons wasted no time taking control. In the top of the first, A. Potestio singled, A. Klepsch walked, and after a groundout, Allen doubled to left‑center, scoring both runners. A fielding error by the third baseman allowed Allen to score, making it 3‑0. UC San Diego added another run in the second on a double by Camacho, and the lead grew to 6‑0 in the fourth on a single by Allen, an RBI single by A. Leopard, a double by T. Martinez and a sacrifice bunt.
Cal State Bakersfield scratched across its first run in the third after J. May walked, D. Cloyd singled, and May scored on a caught‑stealing play. The Roadrunners managed only three more hits the rest of the way. Pelayo singled in the ninth to plate Salazar for the final margin.
The game was the third in a weekend Big West series. The Roadrunners had won the opener 10‑8 on Saturday, while the Tritons won 4‑2 on Friday. UC San Diego improved to 22‑25 overall and 10‑12 in conference play, while Cal State Bakersfield fell to 21‑29 and 9‑13.
The Tritons piled on six runs in the top of the ninth, keyed by a two‑run error, a pinch‑hit single by R. Dunne, and a sacrifice fly. The frame included seven walks or hit‑by‑pitches and three hits. Cal State Bakersfield used five pitchers, with starter CJ Brown working 2 2/3 innings of two‑hit relief, striking out two and allowing no earned runs. Dante Jackson, Joe Tootle, and others also saw action.
Ries, a right‑hander, has been effective in recent starts. On May 5 he threw three hitless innings against San Diego State, and on April 28 he tossed three scoreless frames against Loyola Marymount. His only rough outing came May 2 at Long Beach State.
UC San Diego’s defense turned two double plays, and the Tritons executed three sacrifice hits. Cal State Bakersfield committed three errors, all leading to unearned runs.
The Roadrunners will host Pacific on Tuesday before traveling to UC Irvine for a three‑game set beginning Thursday. The Tritons return home to face Cal State Fullerton in a three‑game series starting Thursday.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of UC San Diego 5, Cal State Bakersfield 4, and its ELO system gave the Tritons a 67.50 percent probability to win.
