Utah at Texas Christian

FORT WORTH, Texas (Interstat) — Texas Christian seeks a series sweep against Utah on Sunday evening at Lupton Stadium, with the Horned Frogs coming off consecutive one-run victories in the Big 12 matchup.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. under clear skies with a temperature of 87 degrees.

TCU (31-18, 14-9 Big 12) enters the series finale having taken the first two games, winning 3-1 on Saturday and 3-0 on Friday. The Horned Frogs have won four of their last five overall. Utah (24-21, 9-14) has lost four of its last five conference games.

The pitching matchup features Utah’s Payton Riske (1-3, 4.15 ERA) against TCU’s Lance Davis (6-2, 2.08 ERA), the same starters who faced each other Saturday. Davis tossed a complete game in that victory, allowing six hits and one earned run with four strikeouts over nine innings. Riske lasted five innings Saturday, giving up three earned runs on zero hits with three strikeouts, though he benefited from Utah’s defense stranding seven inherited runners.

Davis’s recent dominance extends beyond Saturday. In his last four starts, the right-hander has completed at least six innings in each, including a seven-inning effort against Houston on April 25 in which he allowed seven hits and two earned runs. His only loss during that span came May 2 at Oklahoma State, when he surrendered two earned runs in six innings.

Riske’s most effective start came May 1 at BYU, when he allowed one earned run and struck out seven in five innings. In four starts since April 18, he has a 2.70 ERA over 19 1/3 innings.

Utah’s offense has managed just two runs in the series, both on solo home runs. First baseman Cameron Gurney provided one Saturday, going 1 for 4. The Utes have scored three or fewer runs in seven of their last nine games.

TCU’s lineup has been opportunistic. Right fielder Sawyer Strosnider homered Saturday, and first baseman Rob Liddington Jr. drove in a run with two hits. The Horned Frogs have won 12 of their last 16 games at Lupton Stadium.

The Interstat game simulator projects a 7-5 TCU victory.

Following Sunday’s game, Utah returns home to host Utah Tech on Tuesday before a three-game series against Baylor beginning Thursday. TCU travels to West Virginia for a three-game series starting Thursday.
