New Mexico at Grand Canyon

PHOENIX (Interstat) — The New Mexico Lobos and Grand Canyon Antelopes meet Sunday afternoon at Phoenix Municipal Stadium to close their Mountain West series after Friday’s 6-5, 10-inning thriller.

New Mexico (25-21-1) looks to even the two-game set. The Lobos dropped Friday’s opener despite a stellar relief outing from right-hander Cristian Mogen, who threw 6 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing no hits and striking out five. Mogen’s season has been erratic; he yielded eight earned runs in 3 2/3 innings against Washington State on April 24 but rebounded with that dominant performance.

Grand Canyon (18-28) counters with right-hander Cam Cunnings, who earned the win Friday with three innings of relief, allowing two hits and no earned runs while striking out three. Cunnings has been sharp in May, posting a 1.00 ERA over his last two outings covering nine innings.

Conditions will be challenging. The forecast calls for 98-degree temperatures with clouds at first pitch, typical late-afternoon desert heat that could test both bullpens.

Friday’s game featured a balanced offensive attack from Grand Canyon. Trevor Schmidt went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs, while starter Chase Frey worked seven innings, scattering seven hits and allowing four earned runs.

New Mexico got a home run and three RBIs from shortstop Karsen Waslefsky in the loss.

The Interstat game simulator projects a 4-3 Grand Canyon victory, highlighting what is expected to be another close contest between two teams trending in different directions. Grand Canyon has won four of its last six games. New Mexico, which lost five of six before Friday, has dropped three of four.

The Lobos will return home Tuesday to face New Mexico State. Grand Canyon hosts Arizona State on Tuesday before traveling to Nevada for a three-game series starting Thursday.
