South Florida at Tulane
NEW ORLEANS (Interstat) — Tulane’s Jason Wachs hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning to erase a tie and propel the Green Wave to a 9-5 victory over South Florida on Sunday at Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.
The win gave Tulane a split of the three-game American Athletic Conference series after South Florida had won the opener 16-6 on Friday and the Green Wave evened the set with an 8-9 triumph Saturday. Tulane improved to 25-28 overall and 11-14 in conference play, while South Florida fell to 30-20 and 13-11.
Wachs, who entered the game with a .302 batting average, went 2 for 3 with a home run and three runs batted in. He also walked once. Over his previous four games, Wachs had collected at least one RBI in each, including a 1-for-3, two-RBI performance Saturday against South Florida and a 1-for-3, one-RBI outing Friday. In a May 5 loss at LSU, he went 3 for 5 with a homer and three RBIs.
Tanner Chun also homered for Tulane, finishing 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. James Agabedis added a solo home run in the sixth inning. For South Florida, Nate Earley hit a two-run homer in the seventh, and Lance Trippel drove in two runs with a ninth-inning single. Bradke Lohry went 2 for 5 with an RBI double.
On the mound, Tulane relievers Jason Brafa and LuisPablo Navarro combined for six scoreless innings. Brafa worked 3 1/3 innings, allowing two hits and striking out one. Navarro tossed 2 2/3 innings, giving up two hits and fanning two. South Florida starter Ethan Sutton took a no-decision after allowing three earned runs in six innings despite not surrendering a hit; he walked three and struck out four.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the first, when Wachs doubled and scored on a single by Liolios. Tulane extended its lead to 2-0 in the second on a double by Wood that scored Chun, who had been hit by a pitch. Agabedis made it 3-0 with a solo shot to deep right field in the sixth.
South Florida answered in the top of the seventh. Relaford doubled and Earley followed with a two-run homer to right field. Lohry then doubled to left, driving in Rose, who had been hit by a pitch, to tie the game at 3-3.
But Tulane responded immediately in the bottom of the seventh. Chun singled, stole second, and moved to third on a bunt single by Wood. Wachs then launched a three-run homer to deep right field, giving the Green Wave a 6-3 lead.
The Green Wave added three more in the eighth. Harrison singled and Chun followed with a two-run homer to left. Later in the inning, Rowell doubled down the right-field line to drive in Ayala, making the score 9-3.
South Florida scored twice in the ninth on Trippel’s two-run single, but the rally fell short.
