Xavier at Butler
INDIANAPOLIS (Interstat) — Xavier will attempt to complete a three-game sweep of Big East rival Butler on Sunday afternoon at Bulldog Park.
The Musketeers (24-27) have taken the first two games of the series, winning 12-10 on Saturday and 5-2 on Friday. They sit near the bottom of the conference standings but have shown resilience, winning four of their past six games entering the finale.
Butler (17-30) has lost six of its past eight games and remains in last place in the Big East. The Bulldogs will try to salvage the series finale behind right-hander Max Winders, who took the loss Saturday despite a solid outing. In that game, Winders allowed three earned runs on six hits over five innings, striking out one. He also turned in a strong performance against Georgetown on April 18, throwing eight scoreless innings with five strikeouts, but has been inconsistent since.
Xavier will send right-hander Ashton Chronister to the mound. Chronister also pitched Saturday in the series opener, throwing six innings without allowing a hit, though he surrendered four earned runs due to four walks and defensive miscues. He struck out four. Chronister has been effective in his past four starts, allowing three earned runs or fewer in each, including a five-inning, one-run effort at Seton Hall on April 19.
The weather forecast calls for 67 degrees and cloudy at first pitch.
In Saturday’s win, Xavier got key contributions from Landon Mensik, who went 1-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs, and reliever Joseph Arend, who tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings. Butler’s David Ayers homered and drove in three runs, and Gavin Gilmore went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
The Interstat game simulator projects a tight contest, forecasting Xavier to win 5-4. The Musketeers are 9-12 on the road this season, while Butler is 10-14 at home.
Following Sunday’s game, Xavier returns home to host Creighton for a three-game series starting Thursday. Butler travels to Saint John’s for a three-game set beginning the same day.
The series finale is scheduled for a 1 p.m. EDT start.
